[XP Pro] Windows Media Player 11 Will Not Play All Video Formats

I have WMP 11 and it plays mpegs, but will not play .avi files and I'm not sure if it will play other formats. Are there are certain set of codecs I can download that will allow it to play all formats? Thanks.

Thanks, but I figured it out....I upgraded to the newer Divx Codec and now I can play .avi files.

Sorry....But I spoke too soon....It now plays some .avi files, some it only plays the sound, but no video, and some it just gives me an error message that it is not supported. So, I guess that I still need some help. Thanks.

@verizon.net

Check out this thread and the links within:

»Windows Media Player

.divx is an individual codec inside the .avi 'wrapper' or container.
An .avi can have various and different codecs inside, and what's inside is what you have to be able to play, in addition to opening the .avi container.

Open the container, play with what's inside.
Kind of like Christmas.

Hi Mickeyme......I downloaded the codec bundle (K-Lite Codec pack) in your post. When it asked what to install, under "Divx", since I uninstalled the Divx Codec first to be safe, I chose to install the Divx Codec instead of "ffdshow," since you could not chose both. There are still a couple of videos I cannot play. One of them is an .avi file that gives me the message "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to suppress the file."

The other video that I cannot play is also an .avi file that only plays the audio, but not the video. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi sdgthy....As you can see from my post above, I decided to download the bundle in Mickeyme's post. Since it is still not playing a few .avi files, can I also download the gspot software with it? Or will it conflict with what I already downloaded?....If you know.....Thanks.

I think your system have virus, you can format your system and reinstall winamp.

@verizon.net
Windows Media Player won't play any and all formats/codecs.

Try to open the files with a different player (MPlayer, VLC, etc.) and/or install GSpot and open them with that. It'll tell you if you have the needed codecs installed or not.

Thanks....I'll try GSpot first....I guess it won't conflict with the K-Lite Codec pack that I installed

@cox.net

IMHO codec packs are evil. Most of them end up messing up things that are already working. The best way to proceed, is to identify the required codec for each .avi file and download/install each codec separately. "One size fits all" codec packs, rarely cover everything and frequently mess up stuff that was fine before. Not worth it really.

O.O.

You should have installed the ffdshow codec which has the codecs of DIVX. I use a few player's (WMP, Real, VLC and others) but mostly VLC which is a nice player for video.
