Re: FYI: Introducing Embarq RescueIT(SM)

So you charge someone $200 for a house call (»rescueit.embarq.com/plans.html) and then turn around and send out that work to an independent contractor for $70. Do you tell that to your customers or do you only let them figure it out for themselves?

I'd have to say that Embarq needs to make money, just like any other business. And they've looked at the other tech support companies and tried to keep it in line with what they charge, but still try to make it cheaper. The charge that the contractor has is variable. Dell charges $100 for $25 ram, do you think they tell their customers that?

Well I think the problem is they are trying to push every call to tech support to RescueIT.

Recently we we trying to setup a VPN router for a user that works at home. Embarq (as usual) says everything on their end is ok -- "It must be the router"

Well embarq sent one of their techs, contracted through onforce.com, who "fixed" the issue in a few minutes -- modem was not set to bridge mode.

Of course we are going to peruse embarq to refund the $200 charge for the tech to come out and tell us, basically, that embarq support was (once again) wrong.

I've never been "forced" over to RescueIT from any call to Embarq's tech support. It has never even been mentioned in any of my calls.

In your case, the problem was not on Embarq as your internet connection was functioning fine. You were trying to configure a VPN, which is above and beyond the realm that Embarq's normal tech support handles. You have no one to blame but yourself for agreeing to pay $200 to have a tech configure your modem for VPN use.
