[Connectivity] 1 hour lease renewal

Hello! I have comcast basic internet and Friday night i noticed that my internet was not functioning normally. The pages were real slow to load , etc.

Then about 5 am sat. the internet went away. No connection at all. I screwed around with it ( the cable modem - did the modem diagnostic software, etc said nothing wrong with it ) then i had to unplug the modem from the feed and power reset it. It worked fine until Saturday night same thing. Also Saturday evening my cable tv went out.

I thought maybe the tv had lost its channels so i went to scan and there was nothing there. No regular cable channels nor the clear QAM.

Now i called comcast asked what was going on and they told me that my modem was defective and my tv was defective.

Yv and internet came back on about 2 hours later saturday night.

Now my internet is renewing its lease every hour. About every 4th time the internet stops for about 2 minutes while it does this. No router on line just modem.

Any thoughts

One hour lease typically means that there is maintenance going on in the area. What city/state are you located in?

I live in grand rapids, mi. When i called the comcast number for internet and the number for tv they both told me there was no maintance going on in this area.

They said they would send out a tech tuesday afternoon on saturday evening.

I tried to connect saturday with a older machine running win200 but it would do the same thing that the xp machine was doing , no connection, it saw the modem and did the modem dianostic with no problems.

I've been getting 1 hr leases here also, for over a week. It doesn't seem to effect anything, but it is curious. No one seems to know whats up. CSR said everything was normal....nothing on the outage page either(of course there never is..lol).
No biggie, though I did get a new IP. That doesn't bother me. But the 1 hr leases never lasted this long before.

Parts of MI, as well as IN, are going through a digital migration. It can take a week or so, per node, to be completed. It wouldn't come up on the CSR's screen though.

If that's the case why keep it a secret from those of us that are paying the bills ? I have no problem when they are working with something, i can make other arrangements.

But when it just happens, it is not good for me.

Today when i got home the internet was dead again. Took about 30 minutes later to come back up. Also all the clearQAM tv channels were gone also. The regular one were still there.

To tell you the truth, a lot of times stuff is happening in the area or testing and Comcast employees don't get any word on them and are just supposed to say : Nothing is going on that I am aware of etc..

So yeah, What I would think it is if testing or something was going on is the digital transaction, a couple days ago Comcast said they MAY deploy docsis 3.0 In Michigan in a ISP NEWS Article... So yeah could be testing. Keep us Updated on your situation.

I had to re-auto program my TV, seems Comcast moves these channels around sometimes.

Well the tech just left. He said that in grand rapids, mi there are outages that started late friday night. They are still trying to get a handle on the problem.

If the help desk person had told me that saturday night it would have been a big help.

Now i know what is causing my tv and internet problems.

Well here it is Thursday and still same problem. When i turn off the machine for 1 or more hours it looses connectivity to comcast.

When i unplug the cable from the wall and leave it unplugged for 2 minutes or more the modem clears all lights and only blinks the power light amd ether light.

As soon as i plug in the cable to the wall immediately the modem sees the internet and has an ip address for me.

Again with only a 1 hour lease.

Anyone have any ideas. I have 3rd machine to try sometime today to see if it does it also.

Well i have tried a Dell machine, and an emachine machine and both of those do the same thing. I still get the one hour lease and have to unplug the internet cable and allow the modem to clear itself then replug the cable into the wall.

I will probably get a router/firewall device and install it between the modem and my machine and see what happens then.

jemor9,

I live in Kentwood and have had similar issues for the past week. My lease is only 1hr, but there is no lag between renews. Speed wise, I'm on the 16/2 plan, and have had no speed related issues. I've also had no issues on the digital cable side, but the analog side has had ESPN (47) freeze on a comcast injected commercial (GPC Computing, and an ad for their service) for as much as 24 hours. I don't have HD service, or an HD tuner, so I can't comment on that.

1 edit
Same here, still 1 hr leases, but no problems when online.
Everytime I power down my computer I do get a new IP. So far today I've gotten 2 new IP addys. A new 1 this morning when checking e-mail. Went out for a few hrs, came home and turned the computer back on...another new IP.
I hope they are just doing an upgrade, or maintenance....or for that matter anything, cause if not, something is wrong.

Edit...well it's back to a 5 day lease now...

Are you an employee ? Are you certain that this is their policy ?

So yeah, What I would think it is if testing or something was going on is the digital transaction,

Do you mean *digital transition* ?

Hmmm, digital transaction, like getting money out of an atm?
The policy is not to say that they are unaware that anything is going on. The policy is to check on the local outage board and see if maintenance or outages are posted for your area, but there is the occasion when they are not posted so the tech would not be able to tell.

Well here it is 24 DEC 20008 and the 1 hour lease is still here. When i last talked with the people on the phone at comcast they basically said that i have 3 choices :

1. pay to have new feed run through this 100+ apt. building

or

2. just live with it and accept the none connection times that happen with it

or

3. cancel the service

Not a list of very good choices are they ? I will probably
cancel the internet and the premium tv and just get the 15.00 basic. Wireless internet should be soon so maybe i will just wait for that to happen.
