|  [XP Pro] Windows Has Recovered From A Serious Error?
Yesterday, quite suddenly on boot up my computer booted to the desktop and then produced a Windows error:
Windows has recovered from a serious error.
BCCode:1000008e BCP1:c000005 BCP2:f7738d2d BCP3:f76b6108 BCP4: 00000000
os ver 5_1_2600 sp:3_0 product 256_1
Then, it went to blue screen. I couldn't read the stop error code because it went into a reboot cycle.
When it finally booted, and I was able to run Windows, I ran a chkdsk /f. After that, I ran sfc /scannow. It replaced many Windows files.
I restarted twice without issue. Shutdown for the night, and restarted this morning. It booted to the desktop then immediately went to the blue screen stop error and a restart cycle.
Also, the Evvent Log shows an error:
System Error (102) Event 1003
I'm attaching my Minidump files.
I would appreciate any help in correcting this issue.

| There are two errors being reported - DRIVER_CORRUPTED_EXPOOL (BugCheck 100000C5) and KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (BugCheck 1000008E).
The driver named in the BugCheck 1000008E as the "probable cause" of the error is the es1371mp.sys.
The es1371mp.sys appears to be a driver for the sound device.
Have you recently updated the sound drivers?
Where you obtain the drivers from?
Did any other software or hardware change coincide with the appearance the problem? |

I did recently update the sound drivers from the Hardware Updates at Windows Update. I just rolled them back to the previous drivers.
Also, I recently connected a wireless keyboard and mouse. I've removed them and I'm currently using the PS2 mouse and keyboard.
I'm going to restart the computer and I'll post back with my results.

| I also wanted to mention that BEFORE I rolled back the sound drivers and replaced the wireless keyboard and mouse, my computer crashed.
This time I did see the STOP error code:
STOP: 0x000000E3 (0X833093D8, 0X833C7020, 0X8310F000, 0X00000003)
Restarted computer, it's seems OK so far.

Hopefully the problem was a buggy sound driver from Windows Update.
If you receive any more Stop Errors could you upload the minidump file. |

If the system remains stable consider reattaching the wireless keyboard and mouse and see how it goes.

When I saw your sentence about updating the sound drivers at WU, I thought "Oh, no!" Never, ever use WU to update drivers. I learned that the hard way many years ago with my 98SE computer and WU offered me a video card driver update and, naive me, I accepted. What a mess that was! I posted here about and got a bunch of replies all along the line of NEVER use WU for driver updates. Everyone said Microsoft was notorious for offering the wrong driver or the right one that was buggy.
So, don't ever do that again. 
I'm glad it's all fixed.

| Hi Mele, thanks for the heads up. I won't be updating drivers from WU again.
I should explain that this is partially my fault. I'm running a Gateway PII 400 with 384MB of RAM, and Windows XP Pro installed. This computer is turning ten years old next month (Nov 1998), and runs like a dream. (slowly at times)
Two years ago I added a Promise card and replaced the hard drive. (the original Maxtor 10GB hard drive is still running as a slave) I installed Windows XP and it's been smooth sailing.
I do have to remember how VERY old the hardware is on this computer, and leave well enough alone.
I'm thinking maybe I should ask Santa for a new one??!!
It's just that I have so much fun keeping this old guy running.

| That's great! Ten years old and running so well. I have a Dell XPS Pentium III 450, that is now 9.5 years old. It runs fine. But I never upgraded it to XP. I could have done an easy upgrade to W2000 but to XP I would have needed a new modem and other new hardware. So, it still runs 98SE which I like. It has the first piece of software I ever bought still running on it (Cookie Crusher). The hard drive is a Maxtor ...I forgot how large...8GB I think and it is the original hard drive. The ONLY problem in all these years was that I had to replace the floppy drive at year four. (Well, I think it does finally have another problem but I'm not sure what is causing it. It doesn't get the same speed that the XP machine does for downloading. It used to so I suspect the NIC may be bad).
I can't get the case open ...it was always hard to open and got wedged on crooked the last time it was opened about three years ago. Then it had an incredible amount of dust and rust! After three years of not being able to open it I guess it has a ton of dust again. How I wish Dell was still making solid machines like this one. Of course, I realize part of the reason it is still running is because it isn't powerful so it doesn't get hot like my currrent Dell in this Hawaii climate. But all the rust and it still runs fine. Any Dell manufactured in the last 5 to 7 years that has half that amount of rust would be long ago dead.

| I have an old Fujitsu Lifebook Laptop, PII, 233MHz, 3.2 GB HD and 196MB of memory running XP Pro, just about all I can get onto it. It's 10 years old. It runs 24/7, right now being used for my secondary phone line, Magic Jack...no problems. And to be honest, I haven't seen any laptop like this in a long time...solid everything. Then again, it's not made in Mexico or China...I also had one of the old Dells, the one you're talking about...and your right, they are heavy beasts but they don't quite working...
