I have to agree. Aesthetically, the new MBs are just fugly (almost reminiscent of my Gateway laptop).

The 1st and 2nd Gen MBs had a design that stood out and was pleasingly simple - almost elegant. The new design is a confusing step backwards IMHO.

For some, yep. But I like the 15" true color screen on my AL powerbook, even if the H-resolution is only 1280. It's easy on older eyes, has a great matte screen and movies look good enough for me.

When it dies? Tough choice. I guess it would depend on the cost of a logic board at that point.

Back OT, this is, IMO, the marketing of a poor man's MBP. Now everyone can have the MBP look without the 2 grand price tag. I mean, people see more aluminum macs on TV than white plastic :) I'm not a huge fan of the white plastic on my macbook (or my previous iBook).

Firewire 400 offered much faster speeds than USB 2.0. Many DV Cams are now incompatible, as well as losing Target Disk Mode (big ouch for me as a tech), daisy chaining external drives, direct cloning, etc. No expressport so I believe it would be impossible to add firewire on somehow if you wanted it.

If I'm not mistaken display port can handle more bandwidth which I think the new video chips they tossed in will be able to do. So they are trying to push the display port to really push the graphic abilities.

Other than that, it's a worthy upgrade. I am beginning to need Java 6, which apparently is never coming to the original Core Duo macbooks, so I'm considering an upgrade, but maybe I can hold out for one more revision.

There are tons of DV cams out there that people have and make quick movie edits with iMovie.

External storage is a lot better with FW, and self-powered 2.5" drives work ALL the time, not like some 2.5" USB drives, some of which require adapters and other convoluted cables for more power.

And what about Firewire Target mode? How will you transfer tens of gigs to your new MacBook? WiFi? HA! Or be able to transfer files to another Mac should OSX crap out and not boot properly?

How about folks that work with musical devices and instruments, many of them have firewire interface. I've seen a lot of people using their MacBooks (not Pro) hooked up to firewire mixers and other things...

And while this is likely not used by many, I like to capture content from my digital cable box via firewire to my MacBook

Yep. FW has been a staple of every Mac for many years. Unless they gain an eSATA port (highly unlikely) then it's really gonna suck using a MacBook with external storage with USB the only option, and with only two USB ports.

Apple has made it clear that the event will focus on notebook computers. In addition, a leaked Apple support document confirms that "late 2008" MacBooks and MacBook Pros will be amongst the products announced. While there's been no definite word about MacBook Air updates, it seems reasonable to expect that MacBook Airs could also be updated to latest Intel processors.

The October 14th date was first reported by DaringFireball's John Gruber.

MacBooks and MacBook Pros

Apple last updated both the MacBooks and MacBook Pros in February of this year. The MacBook update was a bit of a surprise as the product line had just been refreshed 5 months prior. Rumors suggested that this represented an interim update to keep the MacBook in line with the current Intel processors and that more substantial updates would come later in the year.

AppleInsider first reported in April that the new notebooks would see "major design changes" to bring it closer to the MacBook Air and iMac designs.

Case Leaks

There have been a surprising number of case photo leaks from Taiwanese and Chinese sites over the past few months. The first leak from Apple.pro in July claimed to show a tapered MacBook Pro bottom and top. Though we were initially skeptical of the leak, AppleInsider has confirmed that it is legitimate. Apple.pro later posted photos of the top and bottom of the MacBook cases as well as a a video, though the authenticity of these images are still in doubt.

The most convincing leak came just days ago from MacX.cn. Case images of both MacBook and MacBook Pro were detailed from many different angles and are believed to be real. The images suggest that the MacBook will not include a Firewire port.

Brick, Glass, Two Tone

9to5Mac seems to be standing alone with these rumors, which have not been corroborated by any other sources. After weeks of speculation about the "brick" codename, 9to5Mac believes that this refers to the manufacturing process for the new notebooks. Other claims have included the use of a glass trackpad and the use of both plastic and aluminum to produce a two-tone appearance in the MacBook.

While 9to5Mac has had accuracy with iPod rumors in the past, they were somewhat misguided in their Rainbow iPod rumor.

NVIDIA

Perhaps one of the most welcome changes to the Apple MacBook will be the rumored inclusion of NVIDIA chipsets and GPUs. I disagree. Since the phaseout of the east coast Macworlds, these events seem to be increasing, and the announcements seem to be less and less significant, while the announcements at MWSF seem to have a lot of pressure to be more and more groundbreaking. Sometimes you get a significant announcement at a standard event or even a non-event (iBook G4 is a good example, which officially phased out sales of any G3s), but a lot of these events are being made out to be much more than they are.

Do you not think that they're going to release both the MB and the MBP updates on Tuesday? It seems like they'd keep some people waiting for updates if they only released one at a time. They'll see a buying frenzy if they do it all at once. Also, the MacBooks historically havent had FW800 because it's considered a "Pro" style port.

Some of the rumor sites show a covered port toward the front of the side port plate that some speculate could be part of this new iMac style dock where you slide the whole laptop right behind the screen.
