Buy a copy & load it. As for going with XP 64bit, are you going to specically running programs written in 64bit programming, or mostly 32bit? If just running 32 bit programs, stay with regular vanilla XP Pro 32bit. Otherwise, Vista will fit all of your needs, unless you have applications that the writers no longer have updated, and stopped after 2k came out.
To add, XP will see pretty much everything on that laptop hardware wise.
