Random Disconnects

I just got my 15/1 ADSL2 line installed about 2 weeks and overall I'm extremely happy with it. Speedtests show me getting around 14/900, so I can't ask for much more speedwise.

I have noticed, however, that I've been getting disconnected from the service somewhat frequently (every ~6 hours or so) for approximately 10-30 seconds at a time. The only reason I've noticed is that I'll get disconnected from things like AIM/IRC and downloads will randomly stop during these periods. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing with my connection at the time, it happens even when I'm not home and really nothing is using the line.

Is there anything I can do to attempt to fix this? Is this like a line or a modem problem? I do have another router plugged into my modem, but I didn't have any issues with it on my old service, so I don't think it is the problem. Any help anyone can give would be great! Thanks.

Re: Random Disconnects

Could be a router beginning to fail, could be a loose connection. Reseat all cables. If that does not help, swap in the other router. Could also be the modem, the line or an issue in the Central office of the phone company.

If reseating/replacing cables and swapping out the router does not resolve this, call the support team 24/7/365 at 800.556.5829 for complete trouble shooting.

Updates:

For the past two months now we have been troubleshooting this issue. Speakeasy tech support is friendly and they seem slightly more competent than other major ISPs, but the issue is still not resolved. I have tried swapping all cables, moving the modem away from electronic equipment, switching telephone outlets, removing/replacing the router. Still my modem loses SYNC and disconnects from the DSLAM about once per hour. Finally, they decided that it was my inside wiring. I called a low-voltage electrician and paid over $100 to have him come and inspect the wiring. Nothing wrong. Modem is still losing sync every hour.

Today, COVAD was supposed to come out to inspect the outside box in a last effort to get the DSL working. My girlfriend took the morning off from work, sacrificing pay so that they could come. She waited until 1PM, no one. I call Speakeasy and they say that the tech is scheduled for 3:15PM, even though their website still says 9AM-1PM. What a waste of time.

For $180/month I expect a service that at least doesn't disconnect me every hour. Speeds were good, but if the service is constantly down, there is no point. I think I will call tonight and cancel the DSL and switch back to Comcast. So long Speakeasy.

I've been convinced to try to swap the modem once first, a new one is on its way. I am doubtful this will solve anything.

Final update:

Speakeasy sent me a new modem (overnight). I received it the following morning. Immediately, the problems are solved. Not sure why this wasn't suggested earlier.

Anyway, COVAD won't authorize me to RMA my old modem without a billable dispatch to my apartment. COVAD is just a giant piece of crap from what I can tell. The nice tech @ Speakeasy I've been working with said that if I extend my contract another 2 months, he'll just give me a free modem and "allow" me to keep the broken one. This is fine, obviously it's not his fault, COVAD is just awful.

He also authorized 1 month worth of service credit which is great.

So far, not a single disconnect in the last 3 days. Thanks Speakeasy!
