[ PHONE] Cycling power on modem OK?

Before I had cable telephone I used to cycle the power on the cable modem every once in a while to "freshen" it. I like to kill the power to the modem every once in a while and then turn it back on to reboot it. Not often but once in a while made me feel good

But now that I have the cable phone service I have the battery back up and it *holds* your e911 info in the modem right? So my question is ... what happens if the modem loses power for more than 8 hrs and dies? Does it re-sync up and get all your e911 data back when power is eventually restored?

Say I lose power during a hurricane or something. OK, the phone has an 8 hr battery back up. But what happens if I lose power for more than 8 hrs? I lost power for 4 days last time. Eventually the battery dies and presumably loses all info. When power is restored will all the data be restored or will I have to call Cox to get it resynced?

Because this also answers the question of what if I remove the battery myself to power cycle/reboot it?

The modem actually stores nada... it is all done at the Cox headend.........

And if it completely dies, it will resynch and nothing will need to be done on your end....

Thanks. That's what I figured. I figured there must be some way that it gets everything back to normal if the power goes out for an extended period. I just wanted to be sure because e911 is pretty important. More important than just losing cable service.

Yup, E911 is important, Thats why the modem stores nada and Cox does it all during the modem synch up process...

You should not need to remove the battery to power cycle/reboot the telephone modem. On the back up close to the top you should see a reset button. You should use that instead of removing the battery.

Thanks for that. I will use the button.
But your saying this does not mean that it will hurt anything to pull the battery though; does it? Or are you saying use the button because removing the battery could screw something up?

One more question.

On the back of the modem there are 2 telephone ports. Is the second one for a second telephone line/number or can I use it to plug in a second telephone on the same line/number?

While removal of the battery should not cause any damage electronically because you are suddenly disconnecting and applying power it is possible. More likely would be mechanical damage (Broken battery door cover for example).

As for your question about the port numbered 1/2 I believe that you could plug in a hand set and make use of line one. However I do not believe that it is a recommended configuration. I can find out if you need to know though.

Those ports are for lines 1 and 2. You can use an RJ-11 splitter if you want to connect more than one cord to the back of the modem.
