Caps mostly rumors (I hope :))

I just got Surewest out here in Elk Grove. From the salesguy, the CS rep I talked to, the install guy, and the install supervisor, there are no caps on the net. Running the 20/20 for $59.99 right now, and I've pushed probably 200GB or so on it, up and down, already. Mostly FTP video downloads of the recent game competition I did video for, and not a peep from anyone.

If Surewest has officially gone to no caps again, that is good news. I say again because they have flip-flopped between unlimited and caps a few times over the years. I guess I'll give them a call tomorrow to confirm that this is the case.

Edit: Well I called tech support and they are still claiming that there are caps. 6Mbps 40GB/month, 10Mbps 75GB/month, 20Mbps 150GB/month, and 50Mbps 400GB/month. As I stated in my Surewest review awhile ago, these are soft-caps and they don't usually enforce them, but there is always a chance.

There are caps, they are just not enforced very much. Only the top ten downloaders are even ever looked at. I have posted this numerous times...

50Mbps is 400GB
20Mbps is 150GB
10Mbps is 75GB
1Mbps is 30GB

I forgot the 3Mbps "cap"

When I called up the other day, I was told the 6Mbps and below (6Mbps,3Mbps,1Mbps) are all 40GB now.
(DSLReports removed the "less than" sign when I tried to include it in my previous post)

I can confirm that, at least in the past, they were targeting the top ten heaviest users.

When the 20Mbps tier was first introduced, it had no cap. I was told by multiple advanced tech support people at the time that when asked explicitly about the TOS, "No matter how much bandwidth you use it is impossible to degrade other customers service so you will never get a TOS violation."

This continued to be their policy for 18 months until shortly after they introduced the 50Mbps tier, when they changed their TOS/AUP, made some new caps, and started enforcing the new caps on the top ten users. They also adopted a three strike system for enforcement. You get up to two warnings and the third time, if you still don't make an effort to reduce your usage they would drop your service.

I have no idea if this is still their active policy. After talking to some other Surewest customers, I was getting the feeling that after the initial sting operation on all of the top 10 users for a few months, they decided back off once again. I wouldn't be surprised if they now only target people with extremely excessive usage over multiple months.

My philosophy is to never worry about my usage or count bytes. I just use my 20Mbit connection however feels natural. If Surewest ever decides the premium I pay for natural use of a fast connection is unacceptable, I would drop them in a heartbeat for an ISP that doesn't charge such a large premium and save myself a lot of money. I've been a Surewest customer for four years now and this has yet to happen.
