Re: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10 - October 16, 200 Is this what you see when you try to run the speed test in Firefox? |

jmorlanHmm... That's funny.Premium,MVM join:2001-02-05 Pacifica, CA kudos:4 3 edits | Not exactly. I do not have noscript installed. What I see is shown above.
Edit: Here's a clue. It works fine when I log in to the guest account. This means that the settings are somehow corrupted in my user account. I deleted all the java files I could find under my user account, but it still does not work.
I removed the last java and completely scrubed my hard drive of everything I could find java related. Did a clean install and it STILL doesn't work properly in my regular account. Guest account is fine.
Edit again: Tried Firefox in safe mode. Still doesn't work. |

jmorlanHmm... That's funny.Premium,MVM join:2001-02-05 Pacifica, CA kudos:4 | Thanks. I tried that, but there was only one item in the cache (the DSLR speed test applet) and clearing the cache and apps did not fix the problem.
I also tried removing the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft
...but that did not change the symptoms.
It has to be something in my user account. But what? -- "Wisdom begins with putting the right name on a thing" (Old Chinese Proverb) |

If so close Fx and proceed to:
Program Files\Java\jre6\bin
Copy these two files from that folder to your desktop:
npjpi160_10.dll npoji610.dll
Also open this folder:
Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\new_plugin
Copy this file to your desktop:
npjp2.dll
--Now take those 3 copied files and move them to:
Program Files/firefox/plugins
Now start Fx and try the test again. -- "The little things are infinitely the most important." |

Program Files/firefox/plugins This folder does not exist on my system.
Instead I moved the files to:
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins
Unfortunately that did not help.
Here's where I am now.
1. The speed test fails for both Firefox and IE6 when logged into my normal account.
2. The speed test works fine for both Firefox and IE6 when logged in on my guest account.

1 edit | I did not type in C:\Program Files because some folks install elsewhere or change drive letters. I figured you knew where to look.
If java is working on other sites I would think you have a bug with your account here. Never can tell. -- "The little things are infinitely the most important." |

jmorlanHmm... That's funny.Premium,MVM join:2001-02-05 Pacifica, CA kudos:4 | It wasn't the drive letter, it was the Firefox folder name that was different. Mine is "Mozilla Firefox"
The speed test applet doesn't require being logged into DSLR, so I don't think that's the issue. If I log out of DSLR, the test still doesn't work properly.
Whether logged into DSLR or not, the speed test works fine when I'm on my windows guest account but fails when logged in normally in windows. System is XP Home SP3 fully patched. -- "Wisdom begins with putting the right name on a thing" (Old Chinese Proverb) |

| Try this please.
Remove this file you copied from the Fx plugins folder.
npjpi160_10.dll
Restart Fx and proceed to this java test page. If it is working try your speed or tweak test here

jmorlanHmm... That's funny.Premium,MVM join:2001-02-05 Pacifica, CA kudos:4 1 edit | In desperation I reverted to JRE 6u7. The speed test now works in IE but not in Firefox. Same with the java test site:
»java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
Works fine in IE but not in FireFox. This with the old version.
I was trying to see if the issue was version specific and it is, sort of.
EDIT:
I FIXED IT MAYBE. Since it was working in IE with the old version, I took a cue from GK's suggestion and checked about:plugins in Firefox and sure enough, there were two versions. Two files were left over from JRE 6U10. I removed them, and now everything works. The only problem is that I am running an older insecure version, JRE 6U7 -- "Wisdom begins with putting the right name on a thing" (Old Chinese Proverb) |

MarkAWBarry WhitePremium join:2001-08-27 Canada kudos:16 | When i go to the speed test here at BBR and i click on the java plugin speed test link just before the window shows up i get a warning from Winpatrol telling me that a new file flagged as hidden on my system etilqs i have to click ok before the speed test window will show the start button.
So if o were you I'd check to see if this java file is on your system because if it ain't that could be the reason why you are having this problem of java speed test not working.
I've also included a link to what to some info of what etilqs which is sqlite spelt back wards.

Have you seen any changelog for u10 that notes specific critical security upgrades? I haven't-- but I haven't looked for it, either.
FileHippo doesn't even have this update listed yet. They don't jump the gun, but they do normally post released updates in a very timely fashion.
You may not be running the latest 'cutting edge' version, but you may want to wait or research further before determining that your computer is somehow currently at risk in any way. |

It's funny...even though I thanked my friend dadkins for the heads up on JRE 6 Update 10 in the software forum, I haven't installed it yet.
And believe me, I'm one of the greatest 'offenders' when it comes to needing the "latest and greatest' versions, but my intuition told me to wait on this one for some reason. (I'm not even sure why).
Now, I'm kind of glad I did...it seems this update is causing some problems for quite a few people. Personally, I've never had any problems in the past. (And I always use my tried and true method...that is, removing ALL remnants of older versions before installing the new one).
And I also agree with AB . (Although I haven't researched the changlog much either). I just don't see at this point why waiting a bit on this makes me extremely "vulnerable" and "insecure".
I'm actually surprised javaMan hasn't chimed in here yet, in reply to those who claim the internal updater never works, when in fact, it does. He's also explained in other threads in the past, why it takes a while for those who don't hang out in geek forums, for these updates to show up. (By the way, I respect his opinion when it comes to java, hence the user name, I'm assuming).
The thing is, those of us who hang out in our home away from home (these forums), tend to be notified of updates the second they are released on the Sun developers site.
Even Nicks original link states: "First Customer Ship". This also may explain why various java test sites have always given silly results. Like: "you're using a newer version than the current version available on java.com", or "you are using an outdated version"...(even if it's the latest and greatest version).
Eventually, the update will be available on java.com, and even through the internal updater. When I happen to check out my Daughters Computer (which isn't too often...she lives in another state), there is always a notification in the task bar that a new version of java is available).
I'll continue to want the latest and greatest in many cases, but when it comes to a java update, I think I'll kick back and wait a while from now on.
If you check out the screenshot at the top of my post, I'm all set...(at least as far as I'm concerned).
Now, I think I'll just sit over here and be all happy for a while.
(Edit) By the way, I apologize if I missed something relevant in the thread...I skimmed through it pretty fast. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

LibraPremium join:2003-08-06 USA kudos:1 | reply to NICK ADSL UK I want to thank everyone for their advice regarding this update. I read the thread over the past couple of days and downloaded the offline Java 6_Update 10 and I decided to also download the JavaRa. Java Ra only found one item which it removed. SpywareGuard prevented the BHO from installing in IE (I was notified twice) and I made the changes noted in the Control Panel re the Quick Start and the BHO.
It seems to be working fine on XPHomesp2 (I test by playing a game that requires Java )
Thank you again.
Sincerely, Libra |

DSLR tool to check version of Java installs ! said by plencnerb:Thanks for the links amysheehan . I went ahead and downloaded the file. But, then I saw the post from MarkAW , which allowed me to check my current version, and see if it is the recommended one. I did that, and I get the cool picture above. So, while it looks like there is update 10 out there, I really don't need it. Could this be why I was not directed to the 10 update, but instead the current one that is on my system? Or, should I just upgrade anyway, to be safe? --Brian Use this applet from dslr - it [always] gives the correct version for your machine installed [knock on wood] »/speedtest?test=1

Re: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10 - October 16, 200 said by amysheehan:The problem at this point is that many users STILL have multiple versions of dll files and the like still residing on their systems if they just do the install over the older ones. Sun stated that was fixed in this release but IT HAS NOT. I have contacted them directly as well as consulted with numerous Security sources who agree with my assessment and concern -amy- Hi Amy,
Isn't the new Java plug-in in JRE 6u10 supposed to handle multiple versions of Java on the machine?
From »jdk6.dev.java.net/plugin2/ =================================================== Examples
1. Specifying a particular JRE version for a particular applet:
2. Requesting any JRE in a particular family for a particular applet:
Detailed Description
The version selection support in the next-generation Java Plug-In and associated backward compatibility mechanisms are described in a separate document, JRE Version Selection in the Next-Generation Java Plug-In. ===================================================
If multiple versions are supported, I don't see JRE 6u10 not removing old versions of Java during installation as a security problem per se.
Support staff will no longer require multiple machines to test the behaviour of their services for different Java versions.
What do you think? |
