Westell 7500 verizon DSL + Vista will not connect wireless

Hello. I have just purchased a verizon dsl account, and they provided me with a westell 7500 modem/router. To go with this, I purchased an Asus M70vm laptop, to use in my living room, which came preloaded with Vista Home Premium 32bit.

Vista will not, no matter what, create a solid connection to the router wirelessly. All drivers/OS are updated, and the newest firmware is installed on the 7500.

When I attempt to connect wirelessly, Vista gives me the error message "did not receive a response from the router" and refuses to connect. If I restart my computer, or continuously retry to connect, I may get a connection, which will then fail within a minute. Any attempt to reconnect gives the same above message. I can see the wireless network listed as full strength, and it is not a signal strength problem, as the problem persists even when I am within 10 feet of the router.

I have tried changing / removing the encryption on the router for wireless, with no affect.

I then took my laptop to work today, and was able to connect flawlessly in seconds to the wireless system here that uses Cisco wireless access points and WPA encryption.

Any ideas? I'm all out of them.

Re: Westell 7500 verizon DSL + Vista will not connect wireless

That happened to me once (though with a Motorola WAP). I finally figured out the reason. A long time earlier, I had setup MAC filtering on the WiFi network, but I had forgotten about it, so I hadn't entered the MAC address of the newly connected computer.

At that point I disabled MAC filtering completely, since all it was doing was causing me problems.

I don't know whether that could be your problem, but it might be worth checking.

Hmm, well, as far as I know there is no MAC filtering enabled, though I'll be sure to check it out when I get out of work. Any other thoughts?

Re: Westell 7500 verizon DSL + Vista will not connect wireless

If all else fails, then set the network to be open (no security), and change the SSID to something new.

The reason for changing the SSID is to make sure there is no cached information that is causing problems. If you can get it working that way, then try adding back some security (amd maybe with another SSID change).

If it still won't work with no security and a new SSID, then I would try with a different computer (invite a friend over). The idea is to try to narrow down where the failure is occurring.

you should also change the ssid whenever you do this.

Well, I'm not sure why it worked, but I finally fixed the problem. After turning encryption on and off, creating new SSIDs each time like impala suggested with no change in my situation, I tried one last thing as a last attempt. Talking to my coworker who handles the network there, he said his wireless system was set to only receive 802.11 G signals, not mixed, as my router was configured.

As soon as I switched my router to only accept 802.11G signals, created a new SSID, and power cycled everything one last time, my laptop was able to connect flawlessly! I don't know if this was a problem with my router, Vista, or my laptop's network adapter, but I now have a completely stable wireless connection, and it's working great! Thanks for the replies!

Thanks for letting us know what you did to fix it.
I am interested to know what wireless nic your vista notebook has in it to cause all this trouble.
