[Internet] wireless question

I just moved to Winnipeg from Ontario. I never had wireless before I moved. Anyway I live right now in someone's basement, which has no phone line down there. so I decided to hookup my wireless 2Wire router DSL modem. upstairs.

I am able to connect to the modem/router alright through my wireless card, I installed on my pc.

I still have my PPPOE connection link to connect with my sympatico username and password. But can't seem to connect through it, even when I am able to connect to wireless router/modem.

I tryed to bridge the 2 connection together, but it didn't work.

Any help?

Re: [Internet] wireless question

Let's get this sorted out. Your router, which provides the wireless signal is connected via PPPoE to your sympatico service...right? So when you connect to either the wired port or the wireless you will be online already as long as the router itself can get online. You may still have the sympatico connectoid on your computer downstairs but you don't need to use it...in fact you can delete it as long as you are going to use the router's connection from now on.
Please go further into your questioning if my answer doesn't cover what you are asking.

Re: [Internet] wireless question

Just to be clear: Do you have an internet account or are you just "trying" the modem?

It isn't clear from your question.

upstairs, they have their own ISP. But I want my own from my previous home. I was with Sympatico when I was in Ontario, and still have an account with them.

first I plugged the router/modem to my computer to set it up to PPPOE connection. I had to put 4 or 5 sets of numbers if I remnember right. I wrote down the Encryption number. then I plugged in the router/modem to phone line upstairs. Went downstairs and my computer automaticly found a wireless connection. I put in the encryption number and was able to connect to router, but not internet. You would think I would still need my sympatico ID and password, so I be connected to my sympatico and not MTS.

1st off as far as I know Sympatico doesn't offer service in Manitoba.

With DSL you need a 'DSL line card' on the phone line you're connecting the modem to. You can't just plug the modem into any phone line and expect it to work.

Cancel your Sympatico account in Ont. and send back their wireless 2Wire router DSL modem as they don't sell their equipment. Then sign up for an ISP that's available in Manitoba.

He he he...you are right Mordin. Makes me laugh when I realize what he was actually saying. I missed that. I think with all the answers he may have realized what he was asking was pretty well an impossible scenario. Manitoba has another telco, so he will have to search for an ISP out there. Thanks for clarifying Mordin...sometimes we can't see the "wood" for the "trees".

The modem is not like a dial up modem...it doesn't dial in to your ISP but rather the dsl service has to be enabled using the telephone line as a "carrier"...like a data line. In order for you to use your service you have to have it on the telephone line in the house. You can order what is called a "dry loop" dsl service from Sympatico. The wireless connection only replaces the wire to your router but your router needs a viable DSL service on the line it is connected to.
