[southeast] What's involved in switching back?

Well Verizon FIOS is not working acceptably here.

On a good day, I can get upload speeds of 4.6 Mbps, but my download speeds are all over the map, but typically less my upload speed. What's even worse is that my download speeds are typically worse than what I was getting with Verizon DSL. I'm supposed to have 20/5 service now.

Hence the question: What's involved in switching back to Verizon DSL? Is this a (fairly) painless operation?

In case you're wondering, my current download/upload speeds, according to the Verizon website, are 0.199 Mbps/1.826 Mbps -- and yes, the decimals are in the right place and the units are correct. I was getting 1.5/0.5 Mbps from Verizon DSL and quite frankly I'd prefer to have that back!

Verizon's speed test is notoriously wrong. Try this one: »speedtest.net/

Re: [southeast] What's involved in switching back?

Yep, that shows 19.2/4.8 or thereabouts. However I was quoting the Verizon speedtest for quantification purposes as a standard benchmark (and Verizon has confirmed it from their end).

Performance is actually horrible. It often takes two minutes (now)to simply check my Verizon e-mail -- and that's assuming that there's no e-mail to download. (Used to be a matter of a few seconds with Verizon DSL.) Youtube videos are so slow that they are (now) completely unwatchable (and that includes in the middle of the night, because I've checked). I just redownloaded the PCCheck software from Verizon; that 10 MB download took ten minutes! And, yes, I've run the FIOS Optimizer repeatedly; doesn't make any difference.

I really think I want my old DSL connection back. I can live without FIOS TV; don't watch TV much anyway. Admittedly, Verizon FIOS gives me a lot more channels than Comcast did, but the internet is my primary concern and FIOS simply isn't hacking it.

Addendum: I'm not really sure that the problem lies at this end at all; it is increasingly looking like some problem at the Verizon CO or further upstream with their own infrastructure. The DSL connection worked fine.

I would suspect that the problem exists with your pc. do you have any custom network settings on it? static ip. alt dns?

Re: [southeast] What's involved in switching back?

Negatory. I have multiple PCs here, some are wired, some are wireless connections to the router. Situation is the same on all. Personally, I've made no configuration changes at all and have relied exclusively on configuration changes suggested/made by Verizon techs (remote access) after the problem first developed.

Things haven't got better or worse. Makes no difference. Installation was 6 October; problem did not become apparent until 10 Oct. No configuration changes or new software installs in the interim. Okay, there were the MS updates of Tuesday, 14 October, but that was AFTER the problem began.

Last time my network speeds were "all over the place", I too suspected FIOS. A few weeks later, one of our machines' network cards failed (it was part of the motherboard). After replacement of the motherboard on that machine, the other machines had stellar network performance over FIOS all of the time. And it did not matter if the seemingly at fault machine was powered up or not.

With that in mind, have you tried to isolate the issue to only one machine connected to an ethernet in your home and then run the speed test?

Re: [southeast] What's involved in switching back?

My LAN card (on the desktop machine) is not part of the motherboard. Furthermore, I have great problems believing that my laptop has coincidentally failed at the same time -- unless it's something that the Verizon FIOS connection itself has done.

I've done this with only one machine online (physically connected) at a time. And, in the case of the laptop, I've done it both wired and wireless.

Again, I think I really just want my Verizon DSL connection back.

Re: [southeast] What's involved in switching back?

If you're able to speedtest that close to 20/5, then there's likely nothing wrong with your connection. The Verizon speedtest was not accurate when you had DSL, nor is it now. what does speakeasy.com, Washington server return for speeds?

All downloads are subject to the speed available on the serving end. If they can't fill your connection, you can't get clese to 2.5MBps.

Have you run some tracerts, and line quality tests from here, to see if there are hangups in your routing.

That test (agilityman00) is currently the only test that comes close to 20/5. The Speakeasy.net test (Washington, DC server) shows 384 kbps down/ 3980 kbps UP at the moment; much in line with what I was finding when I started this thread. (And that's the problem.) Verizon tests were accurate when I had DSL.
All downloads are subject to the speed available on the serving end. If they can't fill your connection, you can't get clese to 2.5MBps.
Ahhh, I've been running these tests since Tuesday now. When I say 20/5 (subscribed performance), I mean 20Mbps download/5Mbps upload, not 2.5MBps (in either direction).
Have you run some tracerts, and line quality tests from here, to see if there are hangups in your routing.
Yes, that's where I started.

And I think you're still ignoring the facts that started this thread:
!) Am increase in time to check Verizon e-mail from a few seconds to two minutes, even when there are no e-mails to download.
2) 10 minutes to download a 10 MB download of Verizon's PC Check.
3) The sudden loss of capability to view youtube videos -- by which I mean I'm lucky if I can see ten seconds of a three minute video at a time without the system having to pause to download the next ten seconds! I've monitored these downloads in the Task Manager Networking monitor -- I'm only get 0.03% (yes, three one hundredths of one percent!) usage of my bandwidth. On Verizon DSL, it would be more on the order of 30-40% of capacity and run smoothly.
And again, this degradation didn't become apparent until four days after Verizon FIOS was installed, and boy was it obvious when it did!

Addendum:Unless I mistype, I'm very careful to distinguish between bps and Bps. If I see a mistake, I tend to edit my posts to correct it.

Re: [southeast] What's involved in switching back?

20Mbps (speed) would yield 2.5MBps (download). Not important.

Have they tested your AT thoroughly? I'd point the finger there first, and next at CO equipment. If they haven't escalated you to network people on the phone, hopefully the direct forum people can force exposure of the cause. You do need a tech visit, if they haven't done that yet.

Okay, so you WERE using 2.5 MBps correctly. However, it's sort of important to me when, in fact, it's taking me ten minutes for a 10 MB download, not four seconds.
Have they tested your AT thoroughly?
They say they have, they've even used Remote Access and reset the username/password in the process. I sat here and watched this run on this PC.

There has been no obvious escalation to network people or second tier support. I've never ended up talking to a different person on the phone other than the person who started the conversation.

This downgrade of service is very difficult for me to cope with; there are times when the download speeds are no better than what I had on dial-up! This involves applications that I do not care to discuss publicly.

dont give up on fios, this is not the norm, fios is never slower than dsl, keep calling and complaining, tell them you want to switch to ethernet could be a coax trble in the house or a co trble. point is don't give up.

Re: [southeast] What's involved in switching back?

The FIOS setup is becoming unusable. The wireless functionality in the ActionTec doesn't work anymore, not even if I bring the laptop downstairs and set it up right beside the router.

Speedtest.verizon doesn't work AT ALL anymore, never even starts up.

I was seeing occasional messages of excessive packet loss from the laptop (even when sitting beside the router); now it doesn't work at all, anywhere.

At the very least I need a replacement router.

I would keep calling and complaining, but it seems they've now got a solution for that -- don't take the phone calls (or maybe the phone connection is screwed up, too).

If Verizon FIOS is faster than Verizon DSL, I wouldn't know and would just have to take your word for it.

To your specific question, it's extremely hard to "go back" to copper once you're on FiOS...almost an act of god. I think you should press VZ to help fix the problem as you should not be having this issue. Try the Verizon Direct team here to see if they can help you get satisfaction.

Re: [southeast] What's involved in switching back?

Oh, that's not making me happy and it's certainly not what the Verizon reps said at the time they were closing the deal with me to switch to FIOS. (And, yes, the neighborhood still supports both Verizon FIOS and Verizon DSL.)

Quite frankly, that just makes me more determined to try to switch back as soon as possible.

Will check the Verizon Direct team here.

I am going to guess that you have called this issue in to the FSC? What did they say ? have you demaded a field tech come out?

Going back to copper is extremly hard to do.

Again, they didn't make that clear at all; indeed they indicated that it was a trivial matter to switch back if I was dissatisfied.

PoloDude,

Oops didn't directly answer your basic question. Presuming FSC is FIOS Support Center, I've talked with techs there on four or five occasions so far.

I wonder if it isn't youtube. I'm still on Verizon DSL and I've been catching up to the download often lately. Used to never happen.

I also had problems with Youtube, but I think the problem was with Youtube. Tried it yesterday, and it was working fine. No pausing or buffering.
You mentioned you have multiple computers connected to the router. Are they all running at the same time, and are you doing any peer to peer? You might be running into the limitations of the Verizon branded router. If you do a search, you'll find many complaints about their router and people bridging it to overcome its limitation.

So I have to buy a new router rather than use the Verizon router if I want to get as good speeds as I got when on Verizon DSL? Something sounds wrong here.

Is there some sort of massive failure in FIOS in the DC Metro area? I've been on hold for an hour now and all I hear is scrambled music and snippets of other conversations.

Try the following in order:

1) Power down the Actiontec.
2) Remove AC power from the Power Supply for the ONT.
3) Remove one of the battery leads.
4) Wait 15 seconds.
5) Reconnect the battery.
6) Reconnect the power supply to AC.
7) Power up the Actiontec.
8) Wait for it to settle down.
9) Check the lights on the LAN power. Are they flickering quickly, with no traffic present? If yes, router probably fried.
10) If LAN lights are OK, check connectivity and speed.

Since I'm rather new to this, just what is the ONT?

I think I've gone through this process already with a Verizon tech online. About six hours ago.

Re: [southeast] What's involved in switching back?

The ONT is the Optical Network Terminal. That is the box where the fiber terminates and breaks out into coax, POTS, and optionally cat5. It is usually mounted outside, but can also be mounted inside. Inside, you have the Battery Backup Unit (BBU) and Power Supply (PS) which provide power to the ONT.

Do check the lights on the LAN ports of the Actiontec. If they are flashing rapidly with no apparent traffic, that is a common failure mode of the Actiontec.

Re: [southeast] What's involved in switching back?

Okay, yeah, that's outside here (and it's sorta dark at the moment).

Lights on the LAN ports on the Actiontec only blink rapidly when I'm transmitting; otherwise pretty stable.

Hmm, are there any built-in diagnostics for the Actiontec that I can access through the browser interface?

Nothing that is particularly useful. Under ADVANCED, there is a DIAGNOSTICS entry, but that is only a ping test for connectivity.
