[DIRECTV] Remove satellite?

What should be done to remove an old satellite? Mine is mounted on the roof at the corner of the house. I haven't been up there to look at it but I would guess that it's bolted into the roof somehow. How do I go about getting rid of this thing? Also, if I switch from DirecTV to Dish, can Dish use the satellite? If not, will the installer take the old one down even for a fee?

Thanks.

Satellites usually burn up in the atmosphere. How did you get one bolted to your roof ?

Normally I would be a little agitated by a response like that especially when you know what is meant. However, I did get a chuckle out of it so I guess I'll let it slide this once.

So please just add the word "dish" after the two instances of satellite in my post and the picture should be a little clearer for some of you.

Leave the mounting bracket, but unbolt the pipe from it, and remove.

That is what I was wondering. Aren't they about the size of a school bus?

They (dish)are small approximately 18 inches in diameter. The dishes are not interchangeable. Removing the old dish depends on the installer. Some will some won't.

Yep the satellites are pretty big. Spaceway III weighs right at 13,000 lbs. I was gonna suggest a Titan missile but I think they have all been destroyed.

Leave the mount there, or you will have trouble with holes in your roof causing leaks. The other provider will usually use the existing mount if it's servicable.

Agree. Quite simple.

Go up on the rood and remove the Dish with a wrench. If you want to remove the mount as well then again use a wrench and remove the mount and then plug up the 4 holes so your roof does not leak.

By the way... my first inclination was to be a wise ass and suggest that the easiest way to get rid of an old satellite would be a surface-to-air missle. However, since it was on your roof, I had second thoughts about such a radical solution.
