Actiontec M1000 modem and router

Hello,

I thought I'd share my experience with the M1000 modem. I have a Linksys router running the custom DD-WRT firmware. I had a number of problems trying to find a good combination of settings on the Actiontec modem and the DD-WRT firmware, since the Actiontec modem is also a router. I could not find a combination of settings to keep the Actiontec in its default mode with routing functions turned on. There are some reports of it working if you just turn your router into a wireless access point (»www.windowvistarepair.com/VistaB···uter-29/), but I wanted to keep all the functions of my router intact. So, I did the following, roughly based on this thread: »Actiontec M1000 with Dlink router

1. With your computer connected directly to your computer, get your PPPoE username and password. My modem self-install kit didn't come with this info, but if you have the standard residential service with Microsoft, just go to this page and you can see it: »https://kai03.qwest.com/QuickConnect/Man···orm.aspx

2. Log into M1000 configuration page with a computer still directly connected to the modem (192.168.0.1), and choose "Advanced Setup". I could not get this to work behind my router.

3. Choose "RFC 1483 Transparent Bridging" to make the M1000 modem just a modem. This disables stuff like DHCP and routing. Save the config. I think this reboots the modem.

4. Go into your router firmware (default 192.168.1.1 if you have a Linksys router) and change the WAN connection type to PPPoE. In DD-WRT firmware, this is in the Setup/Basic Setup tab, and is selected with the first pull down menu. Enter your PPPoE username and password.

5. Connect the modem to the WAN port of your router, and Apply/Save the PPPoE changes and reboot your router.

This worked for me. I got a normal looking WAN IP address (97.118.xx.xxx) according to my router, and everything seems to work great. The only key difference is that the Actiontec modem has a light for "Internet" that will no longer light up. I also can no longer reliably access the modem's configuration page, but that doesn't bother me. I hope this helps other people with the same problem.

I have an M1000, and setting it up to work in bridging mode is a breeze compared to the 2Wire 2701 that I rented. I got it specifically because it's such a bare-bones unit--no extra LAN ports and no WiFi (unless you buy the add-on module), perfect for connecting a router. I only wish it implements 'half-bridging', where the modem does the PPPoE/PPPoA authentication and passes the WAN IP address to the LAN side using DHCP.

I have a quick question about the M1000 modem/router. I had to chuck my linksys router because it burned out and I want to use the modem as the router between my PC and my Xbox 360. I have the PC hooked through the ethernet port and it works great. I hooked the 360 through the USB port and the light turns on for the modem but my 360 can't gather the routing info to be able to access the internet. Is there a way I can configure the modem to allow the 360 to access the internet through the USB port?

I think the problem's with the Xbox, not the router. I think that the Xbox 360 doesn't know how to do internet through the USB port.

You could switch them around (PC to USB port, Xbox to ethernet port) or you could try something like this page suggests: »www.xbox.com/en-US/support/conne···-usb.htm

No. Forget about USB and just hook everything up to a $10 unmanaged 10/100BASE-T switch and you should be set.

I second that, I have Qwest/MSFT account with Actiontec M1000 modem and NetGear RangeMax router. The router gives me 1Gbit wired network, which I prefer to slower wireless nerwork for no good reason, really.

Btw, I was able to turn on Transparent Bridging option from behind the router. Unfortunately I still can't figure out how to forward a port, even though I successfully did it with my previous provider and another NetGear router.

Hello,

[snippage]

I also can no longer reliably access the modem's configuration page, but that doesn't bother me.
The reason you cannot access the configuration page likely is there is no route to 192.168.0.0/32 on your Linksys. The IP address of the M1000 thttpd site is 192.168.0.1.

If you can configure your Linksys interface that the M1000 connects to to be 192.168.0.2 then you will get your configuration page back.

HTH others.

Cheers,
IBJ

Thanks, very helpful for maintaining the use of my Netgear RP614 router which has all my settings for port forwarding, IP reservations for my Logitech Squeezebox Duet, printer, etc. I didn't want to have to redo all this setup on the M1000 and frankly I didn't have hope that things like VPNing into work would function correctly. I have everything working as I like on the Netgear and if it ain't broke, you know ...

What irks me is that Qwest doesn't train their tech support folks to explain to customers how to do this. They just say "Oh I'm sorry, you will have to talk to your router manufacturer." Excuse me?! I am paying for your service, I expect to get a little service. Not too much to ask. Good thing there is a community like this to help us take charge of our own tech.

It is also anti-customer-centric for Qwest to put so much subterfuge around getting your PPP credentials. The welcome packet does nothing to educate the consumer about the basics of PPP authentication. Qwest should stop the basics in their expensive four color printed QuickConnect sheet and bloated configuration software that only runs on Win and Mac (What if I only ran Linux?)

So do you have to set up a static route on your router to get through to the WAN side where the m1000 is located? Thanks.

Don't know about your particular router but see this thread:
