[XP Pro] "irpstacksize" is too small....

I know this sounds like a personal problem. (Maybe that's why I get so much spam telling me I can make my stack bigger.) But in checking Event Viewer I see occassional errors, event 2011, "The server's configuration parameter "irpstacksize" is too small for the server to use a local device."

Clicking on the more info link the help center says:
Explanation
The server is configured with too many file system filter drivers (for example, Quota and anti-virus) and/or too many devices, or the irpstacksize parameter is set to less than the default of 15 stack frames. The irpstacksize represents the number of kernel modules that can store information in the input/output (I/O) Request Packet (IRP). The IRP is used to track I/O requests in the kernel.

User Action
The irpstacksize parameter can be increased by changing the registry value.

To change the registry value

Using Regedit, open the following registry key:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\IrpStackSize
In the Value data box, type 15.
Thing is I don't have an IrpStackSize key at all. Should I manually add that key and value? Or should I just ignore that error since I don't see any visible evidence it's causing an operational problem?

WinXP Pro SP3

Your 'visible evidence' is the logging of an error event !

Are you running Norton? This KB article seems to finger Norton as a likely candidate.

Anyway, you can add the value if it doesn't already exist.

I'm running Eset Smart Security Suite dave.

Let me try creating that key/value and see if it stops the error from re-occurring.

Thanks.

But setting the value to 15 doesn't seem like it's going to change anything, since 15 is the default value.

I guess it's worth a try...

Just to double-check: does the 'source' field for your 2011 event read 'srv' ?

Yes, it read 'srv.'

I created the key with a value of 15. It if I get the error message again I'll try increase the value 3 at time as advised in the KB article.

Are you running any encryption software?

In addition to the Eset suite that is.

Negative.

So far, since adding the IrpStackSize key, I haven't had the error again.

Oh that most definitely will fix it, just wondering.

I've seen it with Full-Disk Encryption software compounding the issue.

They're back. The irpstacksize error messages, that is.

dave...in that KB article you linked to it mentioned the importance of using the right case. I used the case they showed. However, that KB article is about NT 4.0. In the WinXP Pro Help and Support Center page I get when I click on the link provided in the Event Viewer error it uses a different case.

The article you linked to:

IMPORTANT: Type "IRPStackSize" exactly as it is displayed because the value name is case-sensitive

The article the Event Viewer links to:

Using Regedit, open the following registry key:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\IrpStackSize

So should I be using IRP or Irp?

Hmm, I'm not sure I believe it's case-sensitive. But still...

I'd try the one you didn't try before

I was thinking along the same lines. I racheted the value up 5 to 20. If I still get the errors next thing will be to try the other case.

20 was my magic number. 15 didn't cut it, 18 didn't cut it so I tried 20 and nothing returned. I've done 25 with no noticeable ill-effects.

Of course in my case, IRPStacksize errors only occurred when trying to access Shares of a Computer (laptops). Not transferring, just accessing.

I've set IRPStacksize to 20. Good so far.

Just out of curiosity did you use IRPStacksize or IrpStacksize in your registry?

As dave suggested, it's doubtful it's case-sensitive.

I believe I've used variations, when doing it manually when the issue presented itself, of the entry to solve the issue, like IRPStackSize, IrpStackSize, irpstacksize. Think I copied the KB when I wrote a batch file to do this remotely.

Oh one more thing, make sure you power cycle like the KB says.

Well, it was the KB article that dave provided that indicated the case is senstive. But I have rebooted and we'll see if having the IRPStackSize set to 20 solves my problem.

Checked my work machine and I did write the entry as IRPStackSize.

I might have been doing it that way manually, just been like... 8 months since I wrote it out by hand.

PS Only used this on XP SP2 machines... doubtful that makes a difference.
