FBGuyyippee ki yayPremium join:2005-03-19 | caps? i know that comcast recently announced that they have a bandwidth usage cap. does AT&T have anything like this for any of their internet services? |

gdmPremium,MVM join:2001-06-15 Mchenry, IL kudos:3 | As of right now not really. I believe the stated if they see very high usage they will send a letter. No one has gotten a letter yet on DSL or U-Verse. I know people that are doing 500+ gigs a month with no issues. |

| awesome. i dont see value in limited internet access so even though comcast will be unveiling their new tiers i'm still willing to pay a little more just so i dont have to worry about some suit telling me that I use too much bandwidth. caps are just silly. |

| reply to FBGuy No caps currently, although AT&T finds a move to usage-based billing "inevitable".

You've hit the nail on the head. Disproportionate bandwidth use has been around since the very beginning. So what's really changed? All of the major internet providers are now video providers. They've seen what's happened with VOIP and don't want to do it again with TV. Protecting TV revenue is exactly what this is about.
Full IPTV could be a threat in the future, but broadband is already giving video on demand competition through services like Netflix (XBox 360), Apple (Apple TV), and Amazon (TiVo). Satellite competitors are starting to use broadband connections to deliver their VOD content. So, it seems pretty logical that ISPs want their cut if they're going to be delivering their competitor's bandwidth-intensive video feeds.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out. -- AT&T U-Hearse Your funeral. Delivered.

FBGuyyippee ki yayPremium join:2005-03-19 | reply to FBGuy ok here is a question. how does a person go about figuring out what your usage actually is? i don't mean a rough estimate i mean where do i get the hard data? |

removedPremium,VIP join:2002-02-08 Houston, TX kudos:36 | I suppose you could put the Xbox behind a router that supports »www.dd-wrt.com/ or »www.polarcloud.com/tomato which would allow you to keep track of its bandwidth usage. The actual U-Verse gateway won't give you any useful information; neither will AT&T's billing people. |

Unless you're running torrents 24x7, or downloading multiple video movies per day, you really have nothing to worry about. Spend your time on other topics. |

| i do run torrents 24x7 i help seed a few linux iso's as much as i can. no shame in that nor is it against any rule. i dont, by any means, use all my bandwidth (twilight hours i use about 80% and during daylight hours i use about 20%)
anyways. i would like to know of a way that I could track my usage. overhead, actually data, etc. a way to track 100% of the data going in and out of my RG. and i'm sure there would be others out there that would want to do the same thing if/when at&t did/does switch to some kind of usage based billing. |

 | You know, you could ask the Evil Empire themselves if they know or have such a thing. If they are going towards that direction, then it would look like they may have such a thing. -- Yo te digo, el mundo esta jodido |

This feature doesn't exist. You've been informed of that several times in this topic.

I'm simply pointing out that if you are acting as a node in a peer-to-peer network and transiting bits for other people 24x7, at or near the bandwidth limit of the service, you are not really acting as an end-user consumer as the service is designed to support. You will be exactly the user that they will target with the caps. They want you to stop that behavior, because you are consuming about 100x more than you are paying for (bottom line). Right now they have nothing in their terms to stop you from doing that. Caps is how they are going to do it. |
