The plan was to split Motorola into two companies, one of which would solely be the handset unit and the other would be everything else. The hope was that someone would buy the handset division of Motorola off of them for some money, but with the financial markets being what they are I don't think anyone's going to be buying a risky debt-ridden struggling cellphone company anytime soon (they are still the best-selling handset company in the US, but not profitable), so I don't know if Moto is still planning on the split.
