2 edits | [DIRECTV] DirecTV Releases Beta of DirecTV2PC application Overview of functionality can be found at DbsTalk.Com First Look
The program is a customized version of commercially available software from Cyberlink. You need an HR2x series HD-DVR, running the 0x290 software (which is not yet in National Release - but is expected very soon) to use this application, and they need to be networked. Wireless-G band can be shaky for HD content, especially over longer distances - Wireless-N is recommended, or better yet, hard-wired ethernet.
If you have a multi-monitor setup (like I do), the application will not work. You can browse the DVRs, but when you go to actually play the content, it won't let you. This is a major drawback, in my opinion.
An 'Advisor' program is available for download at: »www.cyberlink.com/prog/event/200···ndex.jsp It will give you a rough idea if your PC is capable of handling the product.

As you can see from the above, my Samsung 940b monitors are not HDCP compliant - so I can't play some movies and other content that is 'digitally signed/protected'. I have no problems with most normal TV recordings (sports/tv shows/etc).

| Yes, it does support as many DVRs as you have networked.
This is, in effect, the official release. It's been in 'closed beta' for many months (I've been running/testing it for about 4 months) - and now it's up on DirecTV's website, and a co-branded Cyberlink site.
I'd post screen shots, but the software disables your ability to use 'print screen' when it is running. Have to take some digital photos when I get a chance. |

 | reply to dbmaven I get the multiple monitor error sometimes. Other times it gets farther into the process but never actually starts playing. With no way to cancel what it's doing I have to just kill it's process. |

| As far as I'm concerned, the app shouldn't have been released with this restriction.
Supposedly, the base Cyberlink app that this is derived from, in a later version, supports multiple monitors. So, I suppose that once they merge to a single code base (hopefully!!) that functionality will become available. Having to disable a monitor to run an application is, IMO, ridiculous. Why this is a function of a piece of software is beyond me anyway - it should strictly be dealt with by the video drivers.... |

Last night, all 4 of my DVR's upgraded firmware. I'm assuming DirecTV is trying to go live with this immediately. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

DirectTV HR2x DVRs rule!!! Update, I am able to watch DirecTV2PC on my PC from all 4 of my DVR's.
I had to add a rule to Norton Internet Security allowing connections to and from my DVR's. This wasn't hard as they're all assigned consecutive addresses by static DHCP.
My video card / driver failed the DirecTV2PC adviser test. I still downloaded the software, and at first it provided nasty artifacts. Reducing my screen resolution from 32 bit to 16 bit solved the problem. The streams now look good windowed or not.
Installation was easy. I also noticed there are new network options on my DVR's apparently for STB's. The firmware update also added support for 1080P.
Until now, I'd accept an argument from others that there was a case to be made that Dish Network DVR's were superior. Today that changed, there may be some features of Dish Network DVR's which are nice, however DirecTV DVR's are probably the most powerful DVR's currently on the market. I can't believe I'm listening to a recorded "Morning Joe" (an MSNBC AM Program) while typing this.
Kudos to DirecTV! This is awesome, and just in time to help Christmas sales -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

Have you tried to access the page with IE? -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

1. Double-click the downloaded directv2pc.exe file. 2. Follow the on-screen installation instructions. 3. Enter the above activation key when prompted. 4. Double-click the DIRECTV2PC application desktop icon after the installation is complete. We hope you enjoy your experience with the DIRECTV2PC application!

Where is this directv2pc.exe file?
the only file I downloaded was the directv-pc-playback-advisor.exe file. |

Re: [DIRECTV] DirecTV Releases Beta of DirecTV2PC application Looks like Cyberlink got tired of hammering their servers uploading the DTV app software. Their error page suggests you go here:

One other question though:
I noticed on my PS3, it's seeing my HR21s as media servers. It can't play anything from them (thought it CAN see what's on them) but it sees them the same as it sees my NAS and Twonky media servers.
Before I read your post, my first impression was that DTV had enabled the HR2X receivers to act as media servers for one-another so I could record something on a recorder in one room and watch it in another. Looks like they moved it straight to PC.
Any thoughts on whether DTV will allow media sharing between receivers now that they've got the framework in place (HINT: That would be really awesome if they did!!!)? -- Tradition: Just because you've always done it that way doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid. --despair.com |
