Re: 2 NYPD shot over subway fare - Is life that bad out there It is possible that he felt that life back in the DR for him would be that bad, that he would rather risk rotting in a US jail for the rest of his life than go back. The article has nothing in there about whether he faced any sort of criminal sanction back in the DR.
I feel sorry for the officers in this incident, they were just doing their jobs and then this happens. I know they agreed to assume the risk when they took the job, but it still doesn't make it right.

 | And if they had been killed the shooter would be up on a capital murder charge which allows for the death penalty in NY state. -- "It's all coming down!!" - Mike Holmes |

Actually, the NYS Supreme Court struck down the death penalty law a few years ago. There was talk of introducing a new law specifically for murder of law enforcement officials, but I don't believe it's made it through the legislature. -- I swear that I will faithfully and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. |
