You do realize there usually is a constant SMALL amount of data going through your modem due to ARP requests and replies from others in your subnets (public and private) and other subnets on your CMTS interfaces.
Your router answers the requests it needs to and filters out the rest.
This should be nothing new and is the reason why the activity lights on the majority of modems are always blinking. |

| reply to Anonymous_ Sigh.... another typical punker complaint: Doesn't know what he's talking bout.
There are many reasons why there would be a small amount of traffic on your incoming and outgoing bandwidth. For starters, TCP/IP has a "keepalive" system, which basically means that it will send out, and receive back packets on a regular basis to keep the connection active.
Second, if you have a computer running - regardless of the OS - there is always a small amount of communication between it, and the networks it is connected to. DNS updates, ARP requests, you name it. The fact that you don't see the LAN light on your modem blinking doesn't mean a thing, they often don't blink with such low traffic.
Third, there is traffic coming from the outside. This can be any type of traffic coming from the internet, people scanning the IP range, the local network components sending/receiving keepalive packets, and if even if you had CLOSED applications an HOUR before you looked at the test (particularly with P2P apps), it could be that whatever hosts it communicated with in the past hour, will check to see if you are still alive on a regular basis, before dropping your IP of their list.
Run this test.... close all applications, everything that may be connecting to the internet on your PC, shut down every other PC in the house (or disconnect them) so it is just YOU, the router, and the modem..... Once you are convinced nothing is running that could cause traffic, run a CMD prompt and type netstat -a
Look under the column "foreign addres", and if there is anything listed there except your own PC name, the router, or any local hosts (127.x and 0.x) then your computer still has something running that is connecting to those addresses, or those addresses are connecting to you.
Generally speaking, your router would have a lot more addresses it receives communication from, but it's firewall will block most of it.
Perhaps you should put "networking for dummies" on your Christmas list this year. Okay that was mean. -- Obama 2008 - Because McCain is more of the same! |

| If you're 'really' interested in finding what's up (assuming the traffic is destined for your computer, and not just local loop ARP and network info, run 'tcpdump' (Linux) or 'snoop' (Solaris). I think Wireshark works for Windows. -- Canada = Hollywood North |

| reply to Anonymous_ said by Anonymous_ :after the config change Do you have a different IP from what you remember you had when you measured 10 kb/sec?
How long ago was the config change? Was it the change you requested from Turbo to Standard or the change now back to Turbo? You seemed to have flip flopped on that the last couple of weeks... or was it the change from 10/1 Turbo to 15/2 Turbo?
Anyway ANY number of things could've increased the network maintenance traffic (like ARP) on your network segment, which will logically change with any IP change. If you REALLY want to know what it is, use Wireshark with your PC connected DIRECT to the modem. |

| reply to Anonymous_ Are you really bitching about 6KB/s? What you are seeing is normal on any network be it cable, lan, or fiber.
I don't really see how that will affect what you are uploading by any big amount of time, as 6KB/s is a very small percent of the possible 220~KB/s possible with 15/2.
You really must have more time than you know what to do with, as you look for problems with roadrunner all the time.
Why don't you switch to DSL and see some of the problems they have with interleave, line noise, and other stuff. I'm sure they would enjoy your company. |

| reply to Anonymous_ You know I distinctly remember a customer in the NEO market that complained just like Punker. The manager and VP of customer service got so fed up with it they PAID for this person to get service with ATT/Dish. Paid in full an entire years worth of service...
As soon as that contract was up they came back though.
If you don't get it now, you never will Punker. -- "It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something."
