DirecTV now has: 1 - the ability to 'play' (act as a client) media over the HR2x series from Windows Media acting as a server on a PC. (Note: TVersity also works). Music/video/pictures.
2 - the ability to send (act as a server) media from the HR2x series to a PC with the DirecTV2PC software client.
Logical folks come to the conclusion that it will soon give the HR2x the ability to act as a client for another HR2x acting as a server - i.e. true MRV (multi-room viewing) capability. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen - but it seems to be the single most asked for 'enhancement' on the HR2x (next to 'stability' )
Firewalls can screw up the ability for the app to access the internet and your DVRs. Depending on what firewall software you use, you need to add the .exe file that was installed to your "allowed" list.
The app installs in \Program Files\DirecTV\DirecTV by default (or \Program Files(x86)\DirecTV\DirecTV for Vista 64) and is named DIRECTV2PC(TM).exe
reply to dbmaven In the dbstalk.com forums, it seems multi-room viewing is in the cards for these devices.
It appears multi-room viewing via ethernet was a design goal for the DirecTV HR2x series units. My hats off to the developers who sat down a few years ago and decided to create a series of DVR's with so much capability.
The firmware could not provide these features unless the hardware was designed to support it. DirecTV engineers were far sighted. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use."
