iansltx posted : Your WRT54G v6 should work fine as a holdover, with DD-WRT Micro. My WRT310N is reasonably powerful and with DD-WRT is a good unit with traffic tracking. The Asus WL500W with DD-WRT seems like a decent router, though with Asus' own firmware I'm not sure how well it'll work. Didn't work well for me.

So it wont work for me. Now i currently have a airport extreme wireless router. can you recommend a router that would be good with dd-wrt. i have the linksys wrt54g. it is version 6 and cannot do full dd-wrt. it only does dd-wrt mini.

I am going to have to get a new router but just not sure which routers are best.

thanks

Your best bet would be DD-WRT micro. Tomato does not support the WRT54G v6 because Linksys stopped using Linux with some of the newer models, yours being one of them. OpenWRT is the same, they only support up to v4.

If you want a new router, then the best $50ish router would be the WRT54GL. Of course there are more expensive models that can be flashed, it just depends on what you want to spend.

I know that i am going to come very close if not go over the new cap that comcast has implemented. So I need a good bandwidth meter. So far the only ones i have found measure full network activity and since i have a NAS these apps don't really work. does anyone have a recommendation for me?

Thanks in advance. I appreciate any help i can get

Do you have a router? If so you can try great firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato or something that has a bandwidth monitor. I use DD-WRT and it works great with my Mac. Here is a screen shot of what it looks like. It gives you a total month report and a day by day as well on upload and download.

BTW, you do NOT need a full DD-WRT to get these charts. I am using a Linksys WRT54G v8 and this is a micro v24 build. It works great for all I need it and has some great features compared to the default that I needed like the router being able to act as a receiver as well.

I am sure almost every single Linksys router is supported by DD-WRT. I am not sure on the other one you have. You can always just check the site and see. Upgrading firmware takes like 5 mins or so and it is easy.
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

iansltx posted : CNet actually did an Insider secret a week or two ago about bandwidth meters, including one for the Mac. You may want to look there.

THen again, probably the most robust solution would be to use an on-router traffic meter. If you don't mind possibly replacing your wireless router, reflashing to DD-WRT or Tomato on a compatible router (I use DD-WRT since Tomato doesn't support the WRT310N) wil get you a nice traffic graph.

Basically, the 250GB cap gets in the way with a lot of torrenting or backups. I've stopped using online backups (external HDD now) and limited BitTorrent usage, but on the other hand this may not be enough for some people so I'd go with an on-router b\w counter.
