| reply to morbo Most regular devices are meant to be plugged in with the ground pin on the bottom other wise it causes tension on the cable and on stuff that has a transformer it causes the plug to fall out.
I've seen it done for 20A plugs in commercial buildings though and when they had mentioned it in our Electrical class last year they said it was done that way. -- Ricky Smith

3 edits | reply to morbo Usually, the way shown on the Left (Ground Prong Down)... However, if you have an Appliance that uses a 90-Degree "Wall-Hugging" cord with the Ground prong located on TOP (See Photo), then the outlet for it should be inverted (in order for the cord to hang straight down from the outlet).
In Either case, the actual Wiring to the outlet itself doesn't change... The Black ('Hot') Wire goes to the Brass Screw, and the White ('Neutral') Wire goes to the Silver Screw on the outlet... (an old Electrician's Saying: "White to White, You're All Right... White to Brass, Shocks Your @$$")...

But I've been told the proper way is with the ground on top, so if the plug isn't in all the way and something falls into the gap between the plug and outlet, it will contact the ground pin first. |

| reply to morbo The image on the right is a photoshop job, if the ground prong where up then hot would be on the left and neutral on the right. The theory behind ground prong up is if something metallic were to get between the plug and receptacle it would fall away instead of just shorting out.

| reply to morbo I have always been told it is proper for the ground to be up, although rarely see receptacles mounted that way.
We have a new school that was built a couple of years ago. All of the receptacles are 20A and mounted with the ground up. I asked an electrician that was working there about it, and he said it is now required by code.
I don't have a recent NEC, but I'm sure someone will comment. -- We were taking a vote when the ground came up and hit us. |
