Hello, I am slowly learning my new D80. I recently took 2 of the same pictures of my son, in the same location. To me, the colors look different in each of them, although the EXIF information is the same for each of them.

Is there any explanation for this?

I am attaching both pictures. ben_onrock1 is the one I think looks better. ben_onrock looks to "bright" or white to me.

Other than being resized and renamed, these are right out of the camera.

Thanks for looking! -Steve

As far as I can tell, these are EXACTLY the same picture with different processing (kids just don't stay that still). I say this because of the image below that is a difference between the two images (with a little level correction) and all I can see are level/curve differences:

Does your camera have a setting for storing processed plus non-processed .jpg files for each shot? Also, if the EXIF is to be believed, the images MUST turn out the same. I'm REALLY confused by what you've presented here.

EDIT: Do you have some kind of "auto-processing" in the software you use to grab the images from your camera? This is fascinating...

Kringle, first, that was a fascinating analysis, and I'm looking forward to learning from this thread. Second, can you point out the "level/curve differences" in the difference image you posted---on my (I thought well-calibrated) monitor, it looks like a uniform black rectangle. Thanks.

You'll need to check that calibration. There is clearly level and curve differences. Well, I can see red, green, etc around the leaves and the boy - it's not just a black rectangle.

FYI - Your sky is messing things up a little for you. Take the white channel and attempt to convert it to blue or maybe yellow/orange..

This is a difference test without my adjusting the levels on the top layer so that it's a little more apparent:

EDIT: The black rectangle means that there are NO differences between the two layers when one is subtracted from the other. The fact that your monitor is a little dark aside, my first post showed that with a bit of level/curve correction I was able to make the two images almost identical. That basically proved to me that the two images were, indeed, the same image.

The pictures were taken from the memory card, copied into a folder and opened in irfanview.

Thanks for the information. I will look more at this later. I'm running out the door right now.

Thanks again,

Steve

BTW, ben_onrock1_small.jpg is your backup of the original.
Thank you again. How can a picture get redigitized? Is that done in the camera? I don't recall doing anything to the picture.

Pentaxian, regarding this:

You'll need to check that calibration. There is clearly level and curve differences. Well, I can see red, green, etc around the leaves and the boy - it's not just a black rectangle.

What calibration should I check?

Thanks,

I don't know of a camera that will let you go back and process an image, however, with the things they're putting in firmware these days it wouldn't surprise me that it would become a consumer feature in the future.

The only way I know of to redigitize an image is to edit and save it. With the 2+ days in between, I would say that either you played with the curves and levels and forgot OR somebody else in your household did it and didn't tell you. Photography always has its little mysteries.

Thanks. The only thing I might have done was zoom in on the picture in the camera, but there wasn't an image to save the "new" picture. Also, I'm not sure how the "backup" picture was created.

Thank you for your time. You're helping me learn!

It was much worse than that---turns out I just looked at the large version of that first "black rectangle" and can see the differences defintely---so it is less my monitor than aging, tired eyes . Sigh. Thanks.

Fyi, Pentax allows for a whole bunch of after shot editing in camera. In fact, quite a few of the tweaks are/work very nice! It suprised me!

Yes - you can import RAW images back into a Pentax camera and re-process them into JPG's with different settings, lots of different settings.

As a matter of fact, I attended a wedding three weeks ago and I wanted to give a family member a photo - they happened to have a printer with an SD card slot so, I bumped up the contrast, converted to black and white, slid the red channel over a bit, and printed out a stunning Black and White 8x10 on glossy right there on the spot.. Very nice feature IMO.
