| [northeast] Soon to be Fios customer
I will soon have fios and have been reading the posts on the router issue. I have a home network with a linksys wrt54g3g-st router and ethernet switch. I occasionally use P2P and occasionally download large files but most of the time I manage my stocks and take care of bills and email stuff like that. I don't think I am a heavy user. MY question is why isn't the supplied router good enough to handle the job and is there that much a trade off from using moca or ethernet?? Thanks |

It's a limitation in the software (not hardware) where the size of the NAT table is too small when making a large number of connections (e.g. popular torrents with some torrent clients or refreshing a server list from STEAM online games).
If you don't have a lot of custom configs in the liksys, you might want to see how the default actiontec router works for you. I torrent (some) and never game so I've been totally happy with the actiontec. |

| reply to lee189 I've has FIOS for a little over 2 weeks, I used to use roadrunner and DI-624 router. Fios router actually has stronger wifi signals than my old router. I am on 20/5 plan, download is somewhat faster, upload is a lot faster, you will see that when you upload photos or attach photos to emails. And the HD TV quality is a lot better than cable, I used to get pixellation on cable HD broadcasts, no more with FIOS TV, and a lot more channels. |

1 edit | I believe they already have been doing that with their new Westell and ActionTec v2 routers. I don't know of any proof yet since I haven't seen any mention of that here yet, and I haven't been able to try out the new routers either. A relative of mine got FiOS installed on Friday and he was given an old ActionTec, but it seemed to work pretty well. It managed to work fine on the wireless at 20Mbps download via wireless with a laptop and iPod Touch 2nd gen on the wireless, and a PC which I was speeding up for him on Ethernet along with an STB. |

| reply to lee189 Disable "Enable DHT Network" (or equivalent) from within your Bittorrent client and you will have a much lower chance of having issues. Bittorrent itself doesn't automatically cause the crash, but rather when the total number of current and recently used connections.
DHT Network allows bittorrent to find other connections without the use of the central tracker. This is advantageous if the tracker goes does for instance. However, it comes at the cost that it exponentially increases the number of connections. The client will contact other known hosts asking if they know of other clients that are seeding. Those results are then aggregated and the process repeats itself. If you are using a tracker, DHT Networks isn't really necessary as the tracker...well..tracks all that for you much more efficiently. |

The new Westells are starting to show up. There have been a couple of isolated reports of them. And yes, it appears they have addressed the NAT table issue. »Re: [new technologies] New Actiontec MI424-WR replacement FROM V »i36.tinypic.com/2al0e9.png
Of course not everyone that gets one, will post here. Also, the current Actiontecs are still being deployed. No word on the new Actiontecs. |
