sortofageek : Depending on the UPS used and its management software, one could configure the client(s) to run as a service and the UPS to restart after certain requirements are met.

I see my APC PowerChute allows me to set more requirements for my Smart UPS units than it once did. I have been hesitant to allow the UPS to restart everything after a power outage because of that series of power events before the final failure we had here in December 2006, the one that killed off so many of my AMD duallies.

They probably would have survived had they just shut down without the continual powering back up. Now I can tell the software not to allow the UPS to do the power up until after a specified amount of time has elapsed and a specified replenishing of the battery.

usa2k : Have a look in the bios to see if there is a "remember state" for power off condition. If the PC was up when power went out, it could restart itself. (Just thinking ...)

bbarrera : This code extracts the project number from local FAHlog.txt.

Using the project number extracted above, this complex looking line downloads a list of WUs, 'greps' (extracts) the line for our current project, and then extracts (cascaded awk statements) the project name which Foldy Monitor will recognize.

TODO: This should be optimized to only download the FAH data once a day.

This was added to strip out extraneous junk produced by FAH client on Linux. This may have been fixed with the recent FAH linux client. You may ignore this line on other operating systems.

Does what it says, rewrites WU name so Foldy Monitor can display WU data, and removes Tag line because for some reason Foldy Monitor doesn't like spinach (yuck!). ;)

usa2k : Not much time here either. We used to continually hand tweak the CSV file to equate "System" to a WU (But the error could be against more than one WU.) Hand tweaking was a bit of work.

Steve used to tweak them for me and I gave him space on my site to upload. I would have a script to get it to foldy.nozero.org

Over time I worked out a better system, but it would be a major rewrite for foldy.nozero.org, the CSV is updated now and then, but fah-tool.org needs no hands-on effort.

Both are useful because they back each other up, and are on different Hosted Services. (Foldy is on PowWeb and fah-tool is on HostGator.)

Yes.

That is because that is what it listed under the unit name in the unitinfo.txt file. IE... Someone at Stanford messed up.

Jim, can explain the details better. I don't have the time right now.

I used to handle those with a script here, that uploaded a corrected file to Jim. But we stopped doing that some time ago.

We talked with Fishy about getting it corrected, but I think RL got the better of his time.

Edit: I think that some of the Ops correct that issue on their side as well. Or you would see more of those issues.

Yes that is better. But unless someone comes up with a standard naming convention for the files, they will not be in the correct order.

IE... It follows Numeric/Alpha order. Meaning that anything with a numeric char. at the beginning will be before anything with an alpha char. Thus why 4-** shows before F1- 01.

usa2k : The "F" for FAHlog.txt was basically not required, but won,t hurt. It looks cleaner without. On foldy.nozero.org (from memory) I believe it wild cards *-*-FAHlog.txt, where it used to be hard coded HTML. With the wildcard,its more forgiving, and will show files in a list as they show up.

IIRC, the format for files used to be F*-**-*.*. I think that it was set that way for Fishy's Foldy Monitor. I could be totally wrong though, and just assumed that it was a requirement. TF used to have it that way, and things were aligned nicely on the FAHlog tracker page.

Makes no difference really. I am not even all that certain, that it is a requirement for the FAHlog.txt file to be uploaded. Foldy 5 never did upload one. Nor did the earlier Foldys.

I think that the logs were added for help debugging stuck clients.

I think that FAH-Tool does try and get some info from it, if available. But I don't think that it requires it being available. EDIT: But if it does look for the file, I would assume that it needs be in a certain named format. Jim would have to confirm that though.

If I trigger on "Begin Task at Startup" ... how do I get it going without re-booting?

Create Task
-- Give the task a name like "FP_Batch"
Likely want "Run whether logged in or not"
I set "Run with highest Privileges"
I never clicked "Hidden" but it sounds like a good idea.
(I get a cmd screen popping up every hour in the middle of what I am doing.)

On the Trigger Tab
"Begin Task at Startup"
"Repeat task every 1 hour Indefinitely"
Check the "Enabled" box

On the Actions Tab
"Start a program"
List the batch file program.

Settings Tab
Uncheck the "Stop the task if it runs longer than three days"
(Likely not needed but I unchecked it.)
Select (I think) "If task is already running - stop the existing instance"

The enabled checkbox may be the issue.

What I have a hard time doing, is re-reviewing a scheduled task :hmm:
Not sure how to re-tweak it?

MstrBlstr : There are several factors.

1. Two monitoring engines.
2. Differences in OS's. (*nix VS Windows)
3. Tools (software) used to create the script.
There are literally hundreds of ways to accomplish
the same thing. (Varying factors are above.)
4. Not everyone uses the same methods.

I was trying to come up with something that could be used in Windows. but is also backward compatible in *nix. A *nix user can usually look at the commands, and be able to tell what they do. In most cases (especially this one), they could more than likely find a better way to do it. I was trying to keep this one as simple as possible.

The issue comes in, as I was attempting to make just a single *-**-unitinfo.txt file that could be uploaded to both monitoring scripts. Remember, I noted my concern of combining the two together?

Anyway, we managed to get it a single file. But the way that it is formatted, F-T has no issues and F-M does.

I think this is why, but I am not sure just yet.

F-T doesn't care it's that way. F-M does care.

It works GREAT, if you just echo those entries in there as psuedo data. But that requires going back to two separate files, and defeats the purpose of the script checking that info is actually correct.

Still not sure why it is doing that. I think it is a combination of the tools that are being used VS it being done in a Windows environment.

In a *nix environment we would not have this issue. I just need to find the right combination of tools. I used to know how to do it. But it has been so long since I used the F-M engine, that I forget the exact combo.

I will post the script in a bit, and perhaps someone smarter that me can fix it.

Fixed a bug that I could not figure out for the life of me last night, in about 10 mins this morning.

Also, fixed a few other errors that I made last night due to the *stupid* me factor.

OK, I fixed one minor typo in the new script MB posted.

Looks like all 12 files are getting uploaded now. I looked at »foldy.nozero.org/ and see updated Foldy6 stats. But some data must not be transfered or alinged right yet.

And I also get two "curl: (28) connection time-out" error msgs per run of fahtool.bat

Any ideas on either of these two problems?

Change Log - Fixed the upload commands for the files going to foldy.nozero.org, to account for the separate dir. paths the files need to go to.

Edit2: Sortoagain.

Change Log - Lengthened the upload timeout to 30.
           - Remove duplicate files from being uploaded twice.

Basically, you would remove it as you have (or with sed). Then add another set of code lines grepping the Tag: line from the original unitinfo.txt files and appending it to the end of the uploadable Fx-0x-FAHlog.txt files.

Of course, there are a lot of those lines of code that could be condensed into just two lines of code. Two separate uploads.

Still, I think it is best to keep the scripts as separate ones. That way, if you have issues with one, you can find the issues easier. Or just kill that specific script from running.

I don't know about adding back the "F" but I will check that. Of course I prefer always being first. :)

I edited the TAG: line out and foldy.nozero.org shows as good as it gets.
On nozero.org, it won't know what "system" is so the points will be missing.

I see action on foldy.nozero.org and that is great.

Just need those pesky TAG: entries removed, and the script should do that.

fah-tool.org uses these same tags as one of several methods to identify the correct Work Unit.

TwoFrogs needs to add the F back in front of his 4-0x-FAHlog.txt files. Unless he just likes being listed first. ;)

Not sure how you got the F06-0x-FAHlog.txt ones, but there should only be one set of FAHlog.txt files created.

Edit: this has changed a bit since the script has evolved slightly.

A think Gargles was talking about the uploads anyway, and I fix that goof in the script.

Yes, the script that I posted for you was for the FAH-Tool site. Everything should have been correct, less the user:PW entries.

Basically, you have everything there needed to also create the files for the FoldyMonitor site as well. I did not include that, as it has been forever since I used it. I am not sure that I remember the format required by the FoldyMonitor scripting engine.

I do know that you can't upload the same unitinfo.txt files you are uploading to FAH-Tool, to FoldyMonitor. The format of the files is diff., and the one for F-T can't be read properly by F-M.

Thus, why I only did the script for the FAH-Tool site.

The stuff for F-M could be added to the same script, but I wonder if it would not be better to just have it as a separate one? Combining them as one, would make it more complicated. And would also be harder for someone to make all the changes needed.

I can do it either way. If you want me to, just let me know.

I think I see the problem. The script is looking to FTP the files to /ftp.usa2k.com/f06/ ... but the FTP site and user/PW usa2k gave me is for /foldy.nozero.org/

Closer. Got one curl: (28) connection timeout ... but also got seven files copied. I think. Debugging further ... but I am going to stop now until I get clarity on which files should be going to which FTP sites/directories.

Thanks and I think I am close now. Just need that little bit of final guidance.

I have been to this screen. But the pull down for "trigger repeat duration" doesn't have a 3 hour option. It's either 15 min, 30 min, 1 hr, 12 hrs or 1 day.

My vid. tutes are for XP, and seem to be taking a while to get posted.

Vista Task Scheduler is quite a bit diff. Many more options and tabs. At least in Ultimate. Not sure about Home or Premium.

I did find a screen shot, and fixed it up a bit. So, I do know that the settings are there somewhere.

I believe that you have to go the tasks properties, then look in the triggers(?) tab. Might have to click the advanced button to show those settings. I can't get my hands on a Vista install tonight to confirm, but perhaps tomorrow.

MstrBlstr : Close, but he needs to add the path to the wbin folder in the UnxUtils dir. Not the path to the .bat file.

Also, it is the PATH or Path variable. I am not sure about the CLASSPATH. I always use the Path one.

The path variable addition is needed so Windows knows where to find the unixutil exe's to run them when called from the .bat file.

I don't have Vista, but I will see if I can come up with an XP Pro tutorial. Should just be minor differences.

Add a semicolon at the end of the path and then the path to your batch file?

Doesn't really matter. I would just do something simple.

Mine is D:\UnxUtils. (My D: drive is what I use for my programs and scripts, in case I have to format the C: drive.)

Not sure of your FAH directory structure, but can be edited to fit your needs.

Just rename it to whatever.bat, and set it as a scheduled task to run every three(or less) hours.

It depends on you completing step one first though.

Agreed. Foldy6 has now completed 8 of those big "system" proteins. I will focus on getting the stat reporting in place.

santy : Use the Trade-Ups program from APC. I did when one of my older units died instead of replacing the battery.(same policy,return shipping label). I just replaced the batteries in my 2 smaller units. I have one to go, but it's still doing ok considering I have an extra battery pack installed on that one for extended run time. (don't really need it now since I've re-arranged how my equipment is hooked up. I just need a separate one for the modem/router/switch media cabinet )

sortofageek : As long as we are talking about UPS units, I learned the hard way not to prefer Tripplite.

Back when I had all those AMD duallies, I bought four Smart1500XL UPS units because they were less expensive than the SmartUPS1000XL I had purchased several months before that.

Three of those four TL units have croaked now and the SmartUPS is still working like new. When the APC SU battery does give out, I will order the replacement through APC. They will ship the new battery and give me a postage prepaid shipping label so I can ship the old one back for recyle at no cost to me. As parkut said, replacing the APC batteries is really easy.

Well, they are rather heavy, which is why the 60 or so pounders are as big as I will buy. If they were not so heavy or I was stronger, I would buy much bigger ones and not so many of them.

I called Tripplite about my dead TL monsters and they don't want anything to do with me. So, I can trade them in at APC for a discounted price on APC UPS units or find an electrician locally who will replace the batteries for me. I'll probably still need to order the replacement batteries. Still trying to decide what to do about those.

It been a while since I've thought about UPS, and generally, my electric is very reliable at my current location. Especially since some circuits were split to avoid the hairdryer power outage situations.

You don't need a very large unit, 500 watts would be plenty to tide you over short interruptions as the Dell probably runs around 120 watts at full load.

I don't have a single machine running FAH on any flavor of windows, and (shudder) I;m not ready to try and learn anything about Vista till I have to.

Having said that, you will need to figure out how to use curl or some other free program and schedule some file uploads on a regular basis (once an hour is plenty often enough).

On my linux systems I've got a couple of scripts that copy and modify the unitinfo.txt files into the format that the two monitoring websites above like to see. To do that, I utilize the FAHlog.txt, unitinfo.txt and additionally data created by QD to properly extract the work unit name (even when it's missing), and extract or create the Tag when missing, and probably a couple of other things I've forgotten about, including fixing the broken % completion that happens from time to time.

My scripts work for me, are *very* ugly, others like bbarrera created for his systems are far more elegant.

Or some external processing help. FM is missing a lot of info in the fields. I have fixed most of it here. But due to Jim's domain expiring that I was sending the corrected files to, I have not been able to get them to upload.

I know that he is working on a few improvements for FTM, and that may help with FM some as well. I am not sure if he still wants the corrected .csv files that I have or not. If anyone needs them, I can manually upload them here I suppose.

In the meantime, I just switched 12 single CPU console clients to three SMP clients on Windows boxen. Two of those SMP clients are installed on a dual QUAD (Clovertown XEON chips), so I may be living a bit dangerously. Did that yesterday afternoon. No mishaps yet, but I'm not holding my breath. ;)

Wait a minute! If all four were working on the same project/run/clone/gen number, then you haven't installed correctly. Look again. They can be working on the same project number, but the run/clone/gen numbers need to be different. If they aren't different, you didn't give each one a unique machine ID (1, 2, 3 and 4).

As for Curl and the Unixutils, you will either have to type out the FULL path name to them in the script, or put the directory paths that they are in into your system Path variable. Otherwise, you would have to place them directly in your %system% folder. Usually "C:\WINDOWS\system32"

My Path variable looks like this:

I use the other unix based progs as well, so I have the whole folder. But all you need are the ones that Jim posted about above, "cat", "tail", and "sed". Although "grep" is a good one to have as well. So are "head", "less" "sleep", and "tac", and "gawk".

Note to Jim,

Too many Curl connections in the script my friend. You need to take those 16 connections down to just 4. One curl command for each of the four files, and just have it upload all four files in the command for each.

Actually for FAH-Tool you just need one Curl command, and have it upload all 8 files.

FM, would need two curl commands as 4 of the files go to one dir. and the other 4 files go into the \data dir.

So, basically, you could cut it down to 3 Curl upload command strings VS 16 of them. Would be less of a hit on both servers, and prevent issues later down the line.

Once the batch file is debugged, setup a schedule for it.
Right-click "Computer" and choose "manage" from the drop-down menu.
Choose "Task Scheduler"
Use the task scheduler to run FAH_Upload.bat every hour.

I hope copying the code does not have line breaks where the lines wrap in "code".
"code" puts a pound-space in a copy at the start of each line.
Remove the "# " at each line start.

This would work for LINUX too, but "#" would replace "REM" for comments/remarks.

sortofageek : I looked through Stanford's instructions and they still look rather straightforward to me with some configuration I didn't know about. :)

I have been upgrading by stopping the client, dropping the new executable in place and restarting. Had I run config each time I would have noticed a couple of new items. One interesting one gives you the ability to configure switches you would always use, such as -local and -verbosity 9. Doing that, you wouldn't have to put them in the shortcut, especially handy for those running as a service. (It really isn't hard to add/remove switches for a service, but you do need to be able to find them in the registry or in Computer Manager to edit them, instead of just editing a shortcut).

Anyway, if you are still having problems, GarG, please upload the following file as an attachment:

sortofageek : Four console clients should be relatively easy then. What I always do:

1. Create the four directories (folders).
2. Drop the executable into each folder.
3. One at a time, execute the FAH executable. First time run, config will run. Follow the instructions to configure, making sure to do advanced config, too. Each client needs a unique ID # (1, 2, 3, and 4 will work).
4. Create a shortcut for each and add the desired switches to the target command line.
5. Start them using the shortcut.

I don't run mine as a service, just keep them minimized in the taskbar for easy access. Easier to troubleshoot that way, IMO.

Note: After the first config, if you want to reconfig, run from a shortcut with the -config or -configonly switch added to the target command line.

I'm going to look through the instructions I gave you to see if I see any gotcha's. I just scanned them before and thought they looked good, with the ones on the Stanford site perhaps a little easier to follow. You may want to read them both through, though, and make your own decision about that.

The first time I tried this with Vista loaded, I had no idea about the permissions issues and I didn't run into them because I have always followed the K.I.S.S. principle. Short path to executable. Start one at a time from a shortcut, no services.

SMP was mentioned, but Gargoyle isn't there every day to monitor. SMP in Windows still requires some babysitting. If he is going to run under Windows, IMO, four console clients will be most stable for him.

I have some debug to do was well, because I glanced at Foldy6 this morning while rushing out the door to work ... and see that no progress at all has been accomplished on the first WU brought in. (I only started one client up so far)

Gargoyle : New Foldy6 is up and running. Only firefox installed so far. First time for me using Vista.

I wanted to check in with the other Foldy Ops and technically savy FP members here before I install the FAH console client to ensure I do this the right.

Questions:

1) install the FAH 6.20 version ... yes?

2) I see in the FAQ there is some Vista specific config info ... like install into C:\FAH1 ... etc. Anything else?

3) This is Core2 Quad 6600 @ 2.4GHz ... so configure for four clients ... yes?

4) where do I grab the Foldy monitor software?
