Re: Why upkeep DSL when....

Especially when they intend to switch to an all fios network. It requires less maintenance then dsl and the regular copper network. SO long term they save on how many employees they need to keep the network up.

They do not intend on switching to an all FIOS network. When will that get through to some of you. If you live in the big city, upscale neighborhood, or a politically favorable area, you may get it. Those of us in rural areas will never see it.

If Verizon gets their way, you won't be seeing big Red as your ILEC for long either- the long-term plans appears to be to convert what's profitable to FiOS, and sell off the rest to someone else, ideally with huge tax benefits.

Nah. It's an all FiOS network. if you look back they've talked about running xDSL to rural areas instead of fiber :/

I live next to Lawrence, MA, one of the 5 poorest places in the US. They were wired for FIOS before we were. Does this fall under "politically favorable"? In that case, what doesn't fall under one of the three.

I expect them to install their network everywhere they can get an adequate ROE. Would you expect otherwise?

Uh, off topic, but not so much.

Depends how you define poor. $1,100 of per capita income goes A LOT farther in Texas than it does in Mass. My info is dated, I'll admit, but I don't think its gotten any better over there. At least not according to the daily police log in the local paper.

No, I'm sure ROE plays into most of the reason an area get FIOS, but I'm sure politics also does. Perhaps Lawrence, MA is in the district of some hotshot politican, or maybe they are deploying there to avoid charges of red lining. All I can tell you is that FIOS will never reach 100% of Verizon's copper customers. The only way Verizon will be 100% FIOS is if they are able to sell off areas that they don't plan on deploying it to.

Re: Why upkeep DSL when....

Of course not. Because it will never be profitable to string 300 miles of fiber optic cable to a shack in the Appalachians (otherwise known as West Virgina).
