Does it really matter? If CenturyTel does keep the CenturyTel name, they'll surely have to launch a public image campaign. (Even if they keep the Embarq name I wouldn't be surprised if they introduced a new logo to go with it) When Verizon introduced their new name out of nowhere without any history they wiped out two semi well-known names (Bell Atlantic and GTE), but today everyone knows who they are. Would it have made more sense to keep Bell Atlantic or GTE as the name? |

| reply to GeekJedi Hummm ... In my area CenturyHell offers an oversubscribed 1.5 Mbps DSL for $41.20 a month. It's like a time machine that takes you 15 years back with pocket loss and crappy customer service. |

| reply to GeekJedi then you must be in an area where they have competition. we pay $35/month for 1.5/256 in places where they can get away with it because they are the only phone co and the only ISP then that can offer DSL...... they have no competition and they know it. I have friends getting 10mb service for what I pay for 1.5, but they live where there are competitors. |

| reply to EPS said by EPS :While Embarq shareholders will own a majority the entity, it looks like at least most of the CenturyTel board of directors will keep their jobs and will run the merged company, not Embarq's. One wonders how the merged entity will be branded. they'd be smart to keep the Embarq name--at least some of America knows the name "Embarq" because it's the largest independent telco, but CenturyTel? Not only is the name cheesy, but no-one has ever heard of it before.
It's like when SBC kept getting bigger and bigger...it made more sense to keep the name AT&T than to continue being called "SBC".....let's just hope CenturyTel is that smart. -- "True Patriotism is more closely linked with dissent than it is to conformity and a blind desire for safety and security...I accept the definition of patriotism as that effort to resist abusive state power." -Ron Paul |

| reply to TKJunkMail Yeah, was surprised to see Centurytel "buying" Embarq but Embarq ending up owning >50% of the combined company. Sure seems the other way around.
But then there is a history of this sort of thing with them. In the early 90's United Telephone bought Sprint and decided to keep the Sprint name afterwards because it had more brand recognition. Embarq was later spun off from that.

Their speeds are at least decent across the footprint, and the company won't be fiber-phobic. | reply to S_engineer said by S_engineer :Didn't know centurytel had that kind of money....seems to me if they waited a little longer, like after XOHM fails, they'd get it cheaper. It looks like Centurytel is buying Embarq, but when you look at who will own the combined company, it is really Embarq taking over CenturyTel.
after closing Embarq shareholders are expected to own about 66 percent of the combined company.

This merger won't happen. Once the dems take office FCC is going to get shitty. The corporate ecosystem has been perverted far too long by letting these mergers happen while the debt is just shifted around. Let that turd Embarq go under and let other companies buy up the pieces they want. That is how real competition happens. |
