WiMax is a far better technology than white space TV devices can ever hope to be. "WiFi on steroids" may have greater range but it still basically WiFi with all of its other problems and that extra range could actually become a curse if white space device nodes become crowded. There are very good reasons why wireless telcos prefer the 1900 MHz band in big cities and the 850 MHz band in rural areas.
