said by dmelling :Just got off the phone checking for Extended Reach in my area and the customer rep. told me that they got slammed in the areas that they offered it, that they are not rolling out any other areas right now. Do you think they are waiting for the Centurytel deal to be finished before rolling out more Extended Reach? ER DSL was only offered on a trial basis. We trial products such as this to determine if we can launch them on a national scale. Some products make it, some don't. We trialed a product called Advanced Computer Support in NJ and FL about a year ago or so and it was recently launched nationwide as RescueIT. If you have any questions you can always IM me directly.

| Just a quick note to say that despite ancient copper plant and the typical decades old rural telco serving vehicles, I was finally able to get Embarq extended reach DSL up and running at my home this morning. Had I not discovered this website, and the help available through it (Embarq Joey), I am sure that I would still be in call center hell, waiting for someone to commit to something. My order took over 4 months to fill. And while that is nothing to brag about, I am sure that the resources I got access to from this website overcame the barriers that were preventing not just order execution but information availability. Thanks! |

| Hey, and thanks.
We are getting 498 kbps up and 242 kbps down and glad to have every bit of that!
I know it might not sound like much to folks getting 3 to 5 megs, but it is so much better than we have ever gotten (dial up and very slow--and expensive--satellite service) that we are thrilled.
We are in a very rural area, with some pretty challenging copper plant conditions. The good news is that they are plowing fiber here and plan on upgrading the DSLAM eventually, too, so I expect that eventually we will see some bandwidth increases. |

Whereabouts near Oxford do you live? I live out off of Cornwall Road north of town.

| reply to Embarq_Joey I have been waiting for Embarq DSL to come to my area. I am told that it is coming with no luck. I was told that the area manager makes the call whether we get it or not. My daughter has had it for about 15 months and loves it and I know several people in the area that are waiting. I do not think it is fair that some of the area gets it and others don't. Please let me know how or who I need to talk to to get it. |

| reply to Embarq_Joey I spoke to an individual at the number of www.givemepure.com (Centurytel) and he told me that they were rolling out the extended reach program again. I had heard it was put on hold due to overwhelming need and the merger.........hopefully it is rolling out again............... |

| reply to Embarq_Joey We are suppose to be getting extended reach on Monday. I received the modem yesterday. However I have a few questions that Embarq tech number can't answer for me. Any info is much appreciated.
1. We are at 23000 ft according to tech on phone when I ordered and they are installing a smart coil on Monday to the outside line. My inside phone jack (only one) is approx 40 feet from tower. Do we need another designated jack ran to outside post.... or can an extended phone/data cord work as well?
2. There were no line filters included in modem shipment... do I need to purchase these prior to Monday's installation?
3. How can our community here go about requesting a DSLM installed (over 400 homes in 5 mile radius of us) so that we may get higher speeds? Is this even possible? They ran phone digital lines here several years ago if that helps.
Thanks again |

You're probably getting a splitter installed if you didn't receive filters. IM your # and I can check for certain. |

1 edit | Will let you know on Monday after they hook me up. Still no clue if we are going to need another jack in the computer room... or run a phone extension etc. The smart coil is on Embarq as they say I have to have it on the outside post. We were only offered the lowest plan due to the distance.
Hopefully they will put in a DSlam on the corner, they already have other equipment out there and this community need DSL badly as the ones on the main road are the only ones with cable. We can't get that either.
edit.... Tech on phone last week said smart coil when it was actually going to be a splitter to the outside post...didn't happen. |

| Follow up... it's a no go according to the message left on phone by the Embarq Tech. Said after trying this am I am too far out. Really sucks for us in this area too as their info says we do qualify for extended reach. Hopefully I can get a bandwagon calling in and they will do something soon.
Back to my Sprint expensive data cards.... |

| reply to Embarq_Joey Embarq Extended Reach Sucks. As usual with anything I have had from Embarq, You do not get what the Person sells you. They promise you things that are never delivered. I called tech support about my download speeds which occasionally max out at .43Mb/s Yes that's ('POINT') .43Mb/s (right now I'm at .38Mbs) and was told that's fine for extended reach service. I said video's stop everything lags I can't download or send large files, it times out, and was told that's because it's extended reach. Don't get it. I switched from cable to their 'triple play' type package. Basically they convince you that you will save some money and still have the same services and channels you have now, but after you are all set up and you are contractually obligated to Dish network for 2 years , then you find out the channel line up, while it may give a high # of channels but, what they don't tell you is that 1/2 of those channels are religious or home shopping type channel (paid advertisement type). And a few you get free for only a few months. I was told I would have the same phone service I had INCLUDING long distance now I come to find out that that would really be an extra $15 a month (which almost brings me back up to what I was paying for cable, with better channels and better internet service.) And all they say is that the person who sold me the package must have misquoted. (but alas too late or Dish Network will charge you an early termination fee), so you're dammed if you do and damned if you don't. Bottom line, Extended DSL is not what they tout and Embarq's a lousy company to deal with, don't if you have the choice. Unfortunately here in rural NJ they are the only game in town and the game is FIXED!! |
