anon : Embarq Extended Reach Sucks. As usual with anything I have had from Embarq, You do not get what the Person sells you. They promise you things that are never delivered. I called tech support about my download speeds which occasionally max out at .43Mb/s Yes that's ('POINT') .43Mb/s (right now I'm at .38Mbs) and was told that's fine for extended reach service. I said video's stop everything lags I can't download or send large files, it times out, and was told that's because it's extended reach. Don't get it. I switched from cable to their 'triple play' type package. Basically they convince you that you will save some money and still have the same services and channels you have now, but after you are all set up and you are contractually obligated to Dish network for 2 years , then you find out the channel line up, while it may give a high # of channels but, what they don't tell you is that 1/2 of those channels are religious or home shopping type channel (paid advertisement type). And a few you get free for only a few months. I was told I would have the same phone service I had INCLUDING long distance now I come to find out that that would really be an extra $15 a month (which almost brings me back up to what I was paying for cable, with better channels and better internet service.) And all they say is that the person who sold me the package must have misquoted. (but alas too late or Dish Network will charge you an early termination fee), so you're dammed if you do and damned if you don't.
Bottom line, Extended DSL is not what they tout and Embarq's a lousy company to deal with, don't if you have the choice. Unfortunately here in rural NJ they are the only game in town and the game is FIXED!!

Had I not discovered this website, and the help available through it (Embarq Joey), I am sure that I would still be in call center hell, waiting for someone to commit to something. My order took over 4 months to fill. And while that is nothing to brag about, I am sure that the resources I got access to from this website overcame the barriers that were preventing not just order execution but information availability.
anon : I am displeased with Embarq's customer service over the fact that my neighbors up the road are going to be getting the Extended Reach DSL around Feb. 27th, while we have to wait until March 26th. We are all within a mile of each other, and I see no reason why we can't get the service within a reasonable time length of late February. Another reason of why I am displeased with Embarq service is why they would initially tell us that we were going to have the service installed on Feb. 16th, and then get a phone call delaying it for a month, even though we signed up for the service around late December. I do believe that we will end up with the service, but waiting an extra month added on to two months of notification is a little much in my opinion. I'm sorry if it just seems as if I am whining, because I feel that I am, but I think that some other people feel the same way as I do.

I had an Embarq field tech at my home until 7pm checking the line a few days before the new year, very, very commendable service. By 10am the next day that field tech had a DSL modem in my hand and my service was complete. It's not as fast as the true DSL I had before but it's hands down better than the Satellite service on cost and performance we had before.
anon : I have recently run the same gambit as a few of the posters. Got the flyer, signed up for the ER DSL, and waited the 2 months for my appt. I had my poor mother stay the "day" after i was assured that Embarq does not schedule in blocks and my 10am appt. would be just that. When I found that they were late, i phoned the listed number and was told that they were running a little late and asked my mom to stay a little longer since I was working. 3 hours later I phoned again to find that the young lady i spoke to that morning, they didn't know if she was there? ever but were sorry if this inconvenienced me. What crap is this? They then gave me a customer status line that put me on hold for 25 minutes. I was then told that the high speed coils were not installed as of yet in my area and noone knows when they will be or why i was not phoned. 2 of my neighbors reported similar difficulties that week and one was told that it would be available in a month. Can't say im holding my breath on this one. Since when is it OK to lie to customers and not phone them to cancel an appointment? Lets just say that options are limited in my area but when given the chance, the bad PR of Embarq will come to my recollection. If the business isn't good enough to keep upgrades coming on time then please keep the advertising budget for the obvious needs of your existing customers.

anon : Was scheduled for Embarq Extended reach service install yesterday 12-17-08 between the hours of 10am and 2pm. At 2:10 when no one arrived I called the number from the extended reach flyer. The response, "we're sorry no one called to cancel the appointment. Some parts are on back order but we hope to have them next week. Someone will call to confirm when the parts arrive and we can connect service". I was able to wrangle a $29.95 credit on my bill (at least that's what they told me, I'll have to check the bill this month to make sure) since I took a vacation day to wait at home for installation. This is SO frustrating. Earlier in the year I had received notification that the BFRR I had submitted was being acted on and DSL would be available in my area..... later, I find out that Embarq only upgraded a portion of the area and that I would need to get more neighbors from my area to fill out BFRR's and that since Embarq has met it's statutory requirements in PA DSL service won't be available for at least 2 years even if I get the required number of neighbors to submitt BFRR's too. The best part is neighbors less than a mile in either direction of my house have DSL. I'm aware of the distance limitations involved in providing service but why upgrade 3/4 of the customers in my area and leave the rest of us with no advanced services.

She guaranteed she would call me back on 12/01/08 to explain why the service is no longer available. It took until today for me to talk directly with her - she happened to answer her phone after I had left several voice mails that she did not return. The bottom line is that the technician decided there were no more lines in our area and he emailed someone who was supposed to notify me that they were not coming out. So if you are scheduled to receive Extended Outreach do not count on it until they actually show up and do the install and most certainly do not anticipate that it is going to occur and buy a router or new computer or the like!

anon : Hazy Arc,

I've never said I was guaranteed DSL. Go back to my original post. My frustration is not only from not having DSL, its also from not being able to get a straight answer from Embarq about it.

I've had several phone calls with Embarq. I simply want to know "When, if ever, do they plan on bringing DSL to my area". If they don't ever plan on doing - fine, just say so. If the CS reps don't have that info - fine, say "I don't have access to that info". The problem is every time I call I get a different answer. I moved a year and half ago (about three miles) from where I did have Embarq DSL, and was perfectly happy with it. When I first moved I was told by Embarq it would be available in one month, and in fact continued to pay for the service for a few months thinking it would become available. Several months later I was told it would be a year, the next time I called I had to argue with the person that it was in fact NOT available where I live (since half the town has it and has had it for years). Then I was told they were currently working on it and it would be "any time now". Then I was told they don't have info on it. Its frustrating to call in to Embarq, talk to someone who is in Kansas City, who has no idea about the area I live in and get a different answer each time. Each time the person acts concerned, apologizes for my concern and lets me know that if and when its available to me, I'll receive a letter. There is a giant regional Embarq office fifteen minutes from where I live - yet its impossible to speak to anyone who knows.

This is what I'm tired of - not knowing. If they plan on 2009, fine, say so. 2010, fine, say so. Never - fine, just tell me. I'm frustrated with not knowing if it will ever be available to me.

So please, don't make it seem like I'm crying and whining because I feel I'm owed something by Embarq - I know they owe me nothing. I understand about the cost versus benefit of upgrading equipment. I understand they have the right to forgo DSL in any area they want. I simply have said its poor customer service to not let us (current customers) know if they will ever be offering expanded services that we are desperate for. In the day and age when the old land lines are in fact becoming obsolete, DSL is one thing that can keep them from losing customers. So to have their agents give out differing information to everyone that calls (think I'm the only one around here who has called? Think I'm the only one who's frustrated? Very wrong.) every time, is poor customer service. THIS is the source of my frustration. I'm willing to accept whatever the answer is - assuming they would give a straight answer and stick to it. But it seems as if nobody has any idea, but nobody is willing to admit that and say so. Instead we get the run around.

I have a friend who works for them and she tried to get an answer as to when they were going to get it and the answer was "we're doing everything we can".
