WiMAX is very similar to LTE. Not different. Everything LTE can do WiMAX can do. LTE is no more backwards compatible with GSM than WiMAX is.
If LTE was deployed today it would have the same issues that WiMAX would have. Oh but wait, LTE is at least 5 years away so that argument is all wrong.....LOL!
They are both IP based technologies in the network core. It's a forklift upgrade from GSM/HSPA no matter which way you go. After 5 years of being on the market WiMAX will most definitely be much cheaper to deploy than LTE.
