It's a FREE MARKET! Locked handsets and closed networks are all part of the innovation and great customer value offered in a true free market. You can always just switch carriers if you don't like yours!

Actually, everything you just described is a result of it's not a free market. They don't have to compete, and they can keep competitors out.

The free market system is a failed economic theory, much like Marxism. Great on paper. Doesn't work in practice.
