In Buffalo our local cable company has been running Canadian programming for years. It would be interesting to see when Verizon catches up here.

I missed the USA game today :(, but one of the nice things about watching programming not originating in the US is that you get a real perspective of how the world views the USA.

[OT]For example, US news programs tend to filter out anti-US comments, or presents things from a US perspective. Compare the BBC news (on BBC America) with the US networks and you'll see the same news reported from the British perspective. I like the diversity of opinions. Pay attention to the comments made during the period breaks in Hockey Night In Canada. You might hear some resentment to the USA. It's understandable since a lot of the Canadian home-grown players decide to leave their country for better pastures in the USA. It hasn't been the same since The Move (Gretzky, Messier left the Oilers).

OTOH, Hockey Night In Canada has just about the best game coverage I've seen in a long time. So I decided to punish myself and call VZ tech support regarding the 'not subscribed' message. The first 'tech' took 10 minutes to get my account, and then sent 3 resets to the HD box. When I asked about the SD box, he would not send the signal until I was able to explain to him that both SD and HD were showing the same.

Eventually, when the signals were sent to no avail, he said 'Please hold' and suddenly I found myself dumped into the queue and starting all over. Despite my rage, I stayed on and this time got some competent.

After doing about 10 minutes of research, he said he found information that the NHL was now delayed for the Harrisburg VHO until 12/15 (tentative) and could be as late as 12/31.

Yes everything else is coming in fine. We had a similar problem with ESPNU when TV first launched in Buffalo, but it affected the HD version only and it took them about a week to figure it out.

"Currently Unavailable" is not a broadcast issue, but it's an issue with your box. Power off your box and wait a few and then plug the power back in. Checked something for your benefit - NHL Network HD is actually on frequency 861 MHz here - I think that's the highest possible (or 1 of the highest) frequency on the FIOS system, correct? NHL SD is on 243 MHz.

So, it looks like they aren't following every area by putting it on QAM Channel 54.

If all of the blackout and other logistic issues have been worked out for the NHL, what could possibly be holding up the NBA package? I'm at a loss to understand it.

Granted, it's not as pathetic as, say Philadelphia's channel 10 (WCAU — "We save the lamest and most pathetic for last>" (TM) ) just now starting local HD production (when you're a O&O and get owned by QVC in terms of production values, it's time to quit), but it does give one pause.

However there are signs of progress. Did a QAM channel scan today and sometime in the past 2 days, Verizon added at least 2 new QAM channels: 54 with 2 sub-channels, and 102 with 1 sub-channel. To be honest though, with the NHL and NBA seasons ticking by each day, I'm a bit surprised there isn't, I don't want to say "urgency", but a desire to get these turned on.

NBA TV had a great Pacers / Lakers game last night - and well, I miss watching the NHL Net's "On the Fly" show (I think that's what it's called) - pretty much an NHL version of SportsCenter.

There's alot more to it than "streaming".

For channels like NHL Net and NBA TV, physical equipment needs to be installed at each VHO (setting up blackouts, etc..) - then extensive testing, grooming, and then finally distribution to each VSO follows.

Throw in the fact this is a holiday week, I think the staff needs a nice break after giving us all 71 new HD channels this year. ;)

We'll have it by the end of the year.

Believe me - i'm anxiously awaiting NHL Net like no one else, especially since SportsCenter practically ignores the sport anymore.

According to Eric Rabe, who's in charge of Verizon Media Relations, NHL Network will be on channel 87 (SD) and 587 (HD)..and will be part of the Extreme HD package for most people and in the sports package for the NY Area.....
He replied in the comments section of his blog, but ignored any questions about NBA League Pass or NBA TV.

"NHL Network will launch soon and be rolled out to FiOS TV subscribers on a market-by-market basis. It will be part of the FiOS TV Extreme HD package (SD channel 87/HD channel 587). If you live within the NY Metro area, the NHL Network will be part of the sports package.

Something about logistics and the channels still needing to be sorted out blah blah blah. She also said it would be offered at the half-price rate (the end of the year is typically the time that NBA LP is slashed to half-price).

Sad news that us basketball fans (who I find don't make enough of a stink on here) won't be able to enjoy League Pass as the season starts.

Verizon FiOS has lit up the Center Ice channels (1475-1489) and will be announcing orderability as early as tomorrow. Rumor is they will be live as of Oct. 30th. Additionally the NHL Network should be arriving with the next wave of new channels in mid-Nov. depending on your location.
