1 edit | Millenicom: Official Franklin died / UM175 swap thread
Thread formerly titled: Millenicom: Suspicious device death, failed authentication?
As the topic says, my Franklin CDU680 suffered a suspicious death at about 1845EST tonight.
Signal and speeds were good, then I was suddenly disconnected. Trying to reconnect yielded nothing but "network timeout" and "data service not available" errors. Looking at the debug screen gave me a reason to call support. In the AN_AAA Status box, constant flashes of "Failed Authentication". I knew this wasnt good. I literally spend 100% of my airtime in roam, and I figured I was cut off for bypassing the rumored caps, and roaming to boot. I rebooted several times, adjusted settings, removed/replaced the device and did everything to make sure it wasnt on my end, including using my Sprint phone locked onto the same roaming tower to confirm EVDO was still active.
A 2045EST call to Millenicom support lasted only a few minutes. About a minute on hold got me to "Andy". I described how my device suddenly died, and was immediately told to please hold. I assume the rep was trying to hit mute but missed the button so I heard static but several clear words: "...kill Ricky...terminating these devices...another one...". "Andy" came back to the phone and gave me the short answer: "Your device is dead, we will ship you another one." He confirmed my address and told me 3-5 days. A thank you by me and the call was ended.
I am curious as to exactly what "Ricky" did. I'm also curious to know exactly what happened to my device. Working fine one minute, then "Failed Authentication" the next. Physically the device hasnt changed, nor has the displayed signal strength. I just simply can no longer connect.
I'm wondering what Jim_in_VA knows that he slightly let slip in another thread. I'm wondering if my old device was killed for excessive roaming, and my new device will be Alltel native?
Any thoughts? -- Teamwork is a lot of people doing what I say. |

1 edit | reply to aSic I have a feeling this is no coincidence. I had same thing happen to me tonight as well. Same situation, same response from Millenicom. Something fishy is going on. I'm stuck with dial-up until I get my new device.
EDIT: My situation is slightly different though, as I do not roam all that much. I'm usually locked into a Sprint tower, but occasionally get put on an Alltel tower. -- Windows XP Pro SP2|AMD Athlon 64 FX-57|2GB Dual Channel RAM|2x GeForce 7950 GT 512MB|250GB HDD |

| reply to aSic I had my CDU680 go bad at 4:30 this afternoon. I was told that they would ship me a new pantech ami75 in 4 days. I have not had a problem till now, and I have a feeling they are not telling me the truth. I think for some reason they want all of the cdu 680s back. |

Maybe Sprint is identifying certain users and forcing Millenicom to take some sort of action?
I've had that connection problem several times myself. Good signal it just stopped working. Never did they say the 680 was bad. Problem got fixed on their end or Sprints end. Never able to find out any details. |

Never able to find out any details. If Sprint were targeting specific users then it wouldn't be just the CDU680 device having this issue (so far). This isn't the first time I had this problem myself, but it resolved itself after an hour. I figured this would do the same, but apparently it's not.
EDIT: Oh, and no I'm not exactly a low bandwidth user. I know I go over 5GB a month, but probably stay under 15 for the most part. There's no cap I should be worrying about however. -- Windows XP Pro SP2|AMD Athlon 64 FX-57|2GB Dual Channel RAM|2x GeForce 7950 GT 512MB|250GB HDD |

| reply to aSic I am a low user, and don't use the net that much but I have needed it to organize get out the vote meetings. Since they cut off my service I have to borrow a dial up account till the new device comes in. I have a feeling I will be leaving them soon. also at first they said they could turn it back on and would call me back in 30 minutes 4 hours later no call. I finally reached them and they said I had to take the new modem, I have no choice. I was just starting to like them when they let me down. They also said my cradlepoit the recommended isn't compatible with the Pantech. |

| reply to dMarks I've got another problem now (well, one that I knew about but was hoping could be resolved). I still cannot get Windows to load without having the Franklin plugged in. I went over to my dad's house and grabbed his Sierra so I could do some downloading tonight, and was hoping that having another device plugged in in place of the Franklin would solve my issue. However, it doesn't. I still have to plug the Franklin in to get Windows to load, otherwise it'll just keep rebooting.
This sucks. I guess I have a few days, I can go buy another HDD and load Windows on it, then transfer needed files over. Man, I really would like to know why a modem can block Windows from loading if it isn't plugged in. -- Windows XP Pro SP2|AMD Athlon 64 FX-57|2GB Dual Channel RAM|2x GeForce 7950 GT 512MB|250GB HDD |

| reply to aSic This is interesting how this has happened to several others than just myself. All in the same timeframe too. I'm kinda leaning towards the theory that they want the CDU680 back. I'm smelling a conspiracy.... the depth of which is currently not known.
If I spilled my Coke on it, I wouldnt even bother posting, but the fact is the device was fine one minute, then "dead" the next. Other than the authentication failure, the device is physically still 100%; even with the static thing still on the logo.
Hopefully some other folks will post up to maybe offer an explanation for what happened. I dont mind that Millenicom says my device is suddenly bad and wants to swap it out... ...however I DO MIND that they wont tell me why.
And before I get flamed, my meaning is not to be demanding they divulge proprietary information if there is any involved, but that a simple explanation would make me shut up.
I'll be sure to update this thread with what I get/find out.
Cheers! -- Teamwork is a lot of people doing what I say. |

As soon as I posted this my CDU-680 would not reconnect after I disconnected. Called Millenicom and it seems my 680 caught the Franklin "Virus". They are sending me a new Pantech in 4 or 5 days. Meanwhile I'm on dialup, 28.8K actual thruput 2-3 Kb/sec. Useless! |

| reply to aSic Add me to the list. I'm a very low user of this service since I can't get a good signal at home, so I only use it while not at home.
Today, I tried the device after not using it for about a month. I cannot connect. It shows a decent signal, one that would always allow me to connect, but it won't connect and register.
I'm also a CDU680 user. |

2 edits | Finally got through. I was courtesy and patient. They said my device was "inoperable" and needs replaced. Funny, all I said was that I couldn't connect. I didn't have to say anything else about the issue before he stated the device was "inoperable". They must have looked on the account and seen the Franklin listed and knew the issue. Which tells that there is more to the story!
While he was getting the order done, I asked him about a lot of reports on Franklin devices suddenly not working. He first said he didn't know what the problem was and could not answer. He then said a lot of device numbers "got kicked off of the network".
I know I never abused my connection. I bet I never used close to 1gb in the months I've had it. I never even left my home town of Des Moines, so I don't know anything about any "roaming" issue.
I think he was suggesting it was a database issue and that Frankin device numbers were killed from the database. That is nearly what he implied.
I am a bit upset that for the price of the service, a bunch suddenly are paperweights, without notice, and it appears that from another comment on this forum that Millenicom knows something (such as being switched providers). It's too bad they didn't give customers an advanced notice, and simply left them hanging. |

| reply to aSic My only worry is that being switched to Verizon, I may not be able to get a signal. I know that coverage maps aren't all that accurate and that the map here shows I am near to coverage just down the street from me, so I'm hoping my antenna and amp can pick up a useful signal. I can't afford getting a panel antenna yet, so still stuck with my omni.
My road (Decamp) is about 1 1/2 mile long between the two end roads from the pin to give you an indication of scale. I'm probably being worried over nothing, but Sprint map shows me covered in the same area, this doesn't. -- Windows XP Pro SP2|AMD Athlon 64 FX-57|2GB Dual Channel RAM|2x GeForce 7950 GT 512MB|250GB HDD |
