Re: Trick or Treat - CRTC Decision

said by eots:

I think the CRTC delayed it's decision until after the US presidential election because Obama is a big supporter of Net Neutrality and plans to implement rules to enforce it in the US.
I have no doubt there are some ties in the Canada and US Governments but in this case Obama is just the puppet. This kind of thing goes much deeper than the president.

Hate to bring in US politics to this (because it is irrelevant outside of the C-61 lobbying), but umm...

Obama is a big supporter of what Bell is doing right now:

Eavesdropping ... unconstitutionally.

George W Harper's connections are to the neo-conservatives/republicans in the USA, not to the democrats.

So the election of Obama won't change Harper's agenda much, especially not his opinion of what should happen to the telecom industry.

And even with a "most liberal/socialist" black dude as president, the USA policies will not change THAT much with regards to business. Right now, they are in a generaous mode, handing out money to begging USA businesses, and not wanting to hurt them and cause them to fail, so it is doubntful the USA would move towards net neutrality in the short term.

However, if rumours of Vint Cerf being called to consult for Obama (or hired by Omama outright) are true, this would bode well for net neutrality in the USA.

It is important to remember that when the CRTC announces it supports Bell, it will do so with the argument that the satanic boxes are mere network management boxes and that the CRTC does not regulate what type of network management equipment Bell uses. This will set some very interesting precedents, but once done, it is very hard to reverse it.

CRTC should rule that Bell has to stop throttling and that all ISP's in Canada have to pay a percentage of revenue to pay for fiber lines which Canada would own and then get bell to do the maintenance on it or something

Good thinking. Makes a lot of sense.

Nice in theory, not so nice in reality! This would require a crown corporation that holds these lines and the parties responsible (ie: ISPs for payment, BC for repairs, etc.).

How many of the corporations on that list *haven't* had scandals of one kind or another? Sorry, I'm just not hot on that idea after the crazy ways crown corporations misuse funds and take FOREVER to complete projects.
