1 edit | YAY! We can finally watch music videos!
I think the real issue with MTV is that interest in music videos peaked around the year 2000. And now no one cares. -- OASAASLLS |

Maybe your interest dropped before then, but the largest budget videos were 1999-2000. -- OASAASLLS |

Everyone was foolishly spending money with reckless abandon.
Also, Napster and similar utilities crushed the music industry's stranglehold on "pop" music about the same time that music video's peaked in production cost. No longer could they simply make a catchy jingle, get a pretty face to belt it out, and throw top dollars into their tightly controlled system to generate a star and hit song. But music videos were well on there way to being a novelty on MTV and VH1 way before 2000. You were lucky to catch 30 minutes of videos in a row on TRL back then. |

The way I remember it, in the early 90s MTV was still heavily music videos, with bands like R.E.M. and Nine Inch Nails ruling the video airwaves. Then by the late 90s, the crybaby "reality" shows and gossip crap had taken over and I quit watching it. -- "It is absurd to say that our country can issue $30 million in bonds and not $30 million in currency. Perhaps the large budget was due to the music industry trying to drum up interest after falling sales and tv ratings? I'd have to agree that general interest in music videos peaked in the early 90's, and maybe even earlier. |
