Which one is good to install for work/school productivity, iWork or teacher and student office 2008? I need spreadsheet and word processing, and some presentation to work with. The iWork is considerably cheaper than the MS Office 2008. |

| reply to gmlasam If you're looking for cheaper, have you looked at Open Office? Version 3 is excellent. I have Office 2008 but I rarely use it. Open Office is so much faster. And I'd swear, every two or 3 months when I open Office up for something there's a new 150MB patch to download for it. |

| reply to gmlasam Depends on your curriculum. Some school/classes require Office, but offer the program on school lab computers if you can't afford the edu discount to purchase a copy. I know it's stupid, but many English-Lit classes still require MS Word for essays. -- |

1 edit | reply to gmlasam Depends on how much you need Office compatibility.
-- Edit if you need spreadsheet capability, definitely get Office. Excel beats Numbers hands down. Check your campus to see how much it costs to get office directly from them. I know at my school Office 2008 is $50 and Windows Vista is $20 for example. |

| reply to gmlasam I would seriously try OpenOffice Version 3 before dropping money on anything. I bought iWorks family pack for our 3 Macs and as Urg Comcast says, it's compatible but not perfect. iWorks is great for what my family needs and I use OpenOffice when I need compatibility. I spent too much money on Macs for my kids and me to be able to afford Office! |

I didn't think much of iWork 06 either, but I was eager to try Numbers in 08. After playing with Numbers for awhile, I've come to appreciate the layout concept of a spreadsheet. Granted, the sheer number of functions and programmability isn't there yet, and may never be. However, for most users, iWork is more than enough (IMHO, of course); Keynote is drop-dead easy, and Pages is more polished with each release. -- |
