As part of troubleshooting your speed issues, did they maybe replace your modem with one provided by the company?

And if the modem was one commonly used by Wave or the previous company, the tech might have thought it was the company's modem and saw you weren't paying for it. I can see a tech not asking because some people, like the OP, get beligerent about small charges.

Keep in mind the modem might actually have been Wave's or Charter's, however the garage sale guy got rid of the service and never returned the modem. then I could really see them charging you since it's their modem.
