Upgrade from 768kbps/128kbps to 1Mbps/386kbps?

Well, since that news article from this morning is out, I was considering boosting my current 768kbps speed to the 1Mbps speed. Has anyone tried to or have had any success with getting their speed boosted? And if the speeds are getting boosted or an order is placed in, where's the best place to do it? I was considering inquiring about this free speed upgrade since I could certainly use the upload and the bit more download.

This is from Verizon website:

"To make any changes to your current Verizon High Speed Internet service please call us at 800-567-6789, Mon-Fri 8 am-8 pm ET or Sat 8 am-8 pm ET."

Call and sweet talk them.

Like me, the couple other people I've seen post on this deal received a postcard explaining the free upgrade and that it would happen within a couple of weeks. I think it was about 10 days for me. If you don't get the postcard offering the upgrade, they may not being doing the bulk upgrade in your area(yet). I doubt they want to get into doing 1000s of single user upgrades by request. At least thats my guess. FYI, its 1.5Mbps upgrade, not 1Mbps, and its actually 3Mbps if you're close enough.

I've heard about that flyer. I am close enough for 3Mbps + FastPath with only a 7 year old copper line connecting me from the RT to my home. A neighbor across the street who works off of the same phone cable as my cable is in has 3Mbps and it hold reliably. Roughly 2 miles wire length from the RT. The reason I mentioned the 1Mbps speed is because of the new speed mentioned in a news article, and the new speed for the starter plan shown on the Verizon plan, which I currently have but the older 768kbps speed, hence asking about the 1Mbps upgrade. Heck the added upload and slightly more download will be useful for me, but I'll take that free 3Mbps upgrade any day if Verizon is even doing it in my area, but yet again FiOS is set to come within a year now so I'd highly doubt I'd get one and would get promotions for FiOS instead (which I plan on moving to anyways).

Hi I hope they don't auto upgrade everyone to this new entry level plan. I have a friend who can barely get 768/128 because they are borderline for service. an upgrade would probably screw up there service where they may not even be able to stay connected for a good period of time.

FYI - According to Verizon rep, all members still on 768K will be auto upgraded to 1M within 30 days.

If anything, even if your friend's modem can't maintain a stable sync, the modem will sync lower wherever it needs to until it can find a stable area. Yeah it may not be the full sync, but if the speed is a little higher, at least it's trying to stay up.

info333, if that is what is going to happen, I guess I can wait a month. I'll try giving them a call though, see what happens. I just need to get around to it :P

I don't think this can be any good for them. They can't even sync at 890/160 which is correct values for 768/128. they usually sync at 512/160 although sometimes as high as 800/160 and has occasional sync loss but not for very long time only a few minutes here and there then it is back up.

Have you checked their transceiver stats at all? I'm wondering if their line is too noisy or if they're just downright too far out.

They just too far. I had to get support to help them get the service working better because it was really bad at one point. They would be without sync for half or more than half the time. They came and service improved quite a bit. There are still problems but at least it mostly works. hey told my friend that they are borderline. Yet even from the getgo they told them they were borderline but he service worked well for them over a year syncing at 890/160 and then the problems started. I hope if they do plan on auto-upgrading everyone that this won't cause any problems for them.

Called this morning for the speed upgrade and within 15minutes of the call Verizon DSL upgraded the speed. As my old contract had expired last month I renewed for one year and am saving a couple of bucks a month.

Speed tests indicated slightly better then advertised and that works for me.

I was on a $19.99 786K dry loop and called to upgrade -- 4 indians later I was transfered to a sales rep who spoke english BUT told me I had to pay $24.99 for the 1M service because I have no home phone service -- has anyone gotten the 1M for $19 with no home phone service?

I thought I would have trouble going to the 1792 connections because my line attenuation is always around 63, which means I'm way out in the fringe area too. But my modem does sync at the full 1792/448. The only downside is that my downstream noise margin does vary wildly. I've even seen it drop down to -1.5 I didn't even know the noise margins could go to a negative number. Anyway, looking at my modem logs, I look to be loosing my connection about once a day, but it always resyncs back to the 1792, and so far I haven't been online when its had to reconnected. Even if I was, its only about a 10 second process, so I'll live with that for the greatly improved speed.

It would not make no sense whatsoever for them to upgrade my friend becauce my friend does not even sync at 890/160 which is for 768/128 which is what they have.

Here's my experience...

After speaking with three representatives who among other things said that no such speed existed, you have to order Fios in order have higher speed (Fios is not in this area yet) and the third said she had no idea what to do, finally with the fourth representative, I was able to upgrade the speed level to 1.0 mbps down/384 kbps up with no change in price ($17.99) and no requirement to enter into a term agreement.

I ordered the upgrade on 11/05/08 and the upgrade was completed today, 11/06/08.

Ran two speed tests today, and both came back at 1005 kbps up and 385 kbps down.

The service appears to be working just fine at the new increased speed levels.

Do you have home phone service with Verizon or are you on a dry loop?
