| reply to Smith6612 Re: Upgrade from 768kbps/128kbps to 1Mbps/386kbps?
I finally called the billing department yesterday. I mentioned a bundle that the local cable co. was offering and asked if there was any way to lower my bill. I also asked why the Verizon website no longer lists the 768k/128k plan that I was paying for. I now have the 1024k/384k plan and my monthly bill dropped by $10. |

| reply to C54H Update:I was paying $34 a month for 768Kbps. Now I'll pay $29 a month for 3Mbps. So I did get a speed boost for less money. I coulda got 768Kbps for $17 but since I was used to $34 I figured WTH. Whether I actually see it we'll see. A tech did test my line recently and said it could go up to 7.1Mbps but at the time I was like "what ever...". |

| reply to HarryH3 I forgot to mention that I had my modem status screen up while I was chatting with the Verizon rep. The modem provisioned at the higher speed while we were still on the phone! He said that there are no humans involved in that process in most places these days. As soon as the order is entered, the systems make the change automagically. |

@verizon.net | That's so funny. The guy in sales said it would be immediate. Then tech support said 2 days. I give up. Endevor to persevere. That should be Verizon's moto. |

@verizon.net | Well it took a second call but I finally got 3Mbps (2.89Mbps actually).
Endeavor to persevere. |

2 edits | reply to Smith6612 I tried today and talked to someone local, speaking English and talking about our local scene. I'm in the middle of a 2 year contract for $14.99/month for 768/128. I can keep that going at that price just by remaining a customer. If they switch me to 1M/386, I get that at the same rate until my contract is up and then it goes to $25.99/month. No thanks. She said she would switch me on the spot but she couldn't stop it from hitting my bill in 12 months. |

| reply to Smith6612 Good morning,
Is the upgrade 1Mbps, 1.5, or 3? I guess even 1Mbps is better than the 768kbps I now have.
I am grateful to Broadband and all of you for posting this information . I live in New York City and had no idea that Verizon had begun to upgrade the DSL speeds until I read Broadband story on another site, with a link to this forum . You can bet I will be giving them a call first thing this morning. Of course first I want to have as much information as I can before I make the call.
I noticed, as someone here mentioned, the DSL speed of 768 is no longer being offered on Verizon's website. They are offering a 2 year plan for $17.99 and looking very closely I saw it was for a 1M plan. I would not have noticed this (or knew what it meant) had I not been informed by this community.
After my call tomorrow, I will post back with the outcome.
Again, I thank Broadband and all of you for this valuable information.

We were paying $46 for phone and $22 for 768 kbps DSL. I called about upgrading to a higher speed and they said that if I went for the 3 mbps speed the "bundle" price would be $70. So basically we increased our speed by 2 mbps for $2. That's a dollar per mbps! |

| reply to Smith6612 Good Morning,
As promised, I have returned to report the outcome of my request to Verizon for a speed upgrade.
I chatted with a Verizon agent and w/o drama he immediately handled my request. He indicated that I should see an increase in speed within 2 days. I thanked him and waited 2 hours before I engaged another agent with the result of my first request. I wanted to make sure the request went through.
This time I was told by the agent that he did not have the tools to assist me with this matter. I typed backed that earlier another agent indicated he had taken care of my upgrade. By this time, due to all of the apologies, I realized it was obvious everything he was typing was coming from a standard pre-arranged text and it was futile going any further! I thanked him and hung up.
However, I happened across my request for an upgrade in my on line account. Everything was detailed just as the first agent had promised. (Good one for Verizon!)
I checked the work order again at 7 AM and found the upgrade had been completed! (Another one for Verizon!)
Now for the Bandwidth Tests. I did 6 bandwidth tests with 6 different testers and got 6 different speeds! The highest bandwidth was received using SpeakEasy: 1003/381. The lowest from Beeline: 80Ks! In the middle, Cnet: 894.9. Bandwidth Place 979.72/119. Bandwidth's upload of 119 is lower than the 131 I had before the upgrade.
However, so far I am satisfied with the results. I hope I can see the difference in my computer's performance. Also, I want to see if there is an increase in the $19.99 I now pay for internet service.
Thank you all again. |

| If your speeds are varying, it may just be worth it to check the transceiver stats to see if it's congestion or if it's the line or what not. Ever since I've gotten the boost roughly two months ago, the line has felt even better. In a matter of fact, our iPod Touch FINALLY does not need to pause to view a video now thanks to the increased bandwidth, and I can be uploading at 48.8KB/s and download at 122KB/s all at the same time. In a matter of fact, I did upload 700MB last night to a Garry's Mod game server one of my friends opened up I saved him a good 8 hours since he still has the 768kbps/128kbps speed. |

| reply to bfollett Hello bfollett,
We are now near the end of January '09 and had I not read the article here, I would not have known about the free upgrade.
I am in New York City and never received a postcard. After reading the information here yesterday, I chatted with Verizon last night and got the upgrade.
Also, I was told by the tech that it is not 1.5M, it is 1M. Looking closely at the offer on the Verizon's website, they are offering a 1M plan for 2 years at $17.99. The 1M is shown quite small. Nowhere is the 768k offered any longer. However, still they have not advertised a free upgrade.
I hope there is not anyone waiting for Verizon to send them a postcard. If you want the upgrade you should call/chat/email them as soon as possible!
For everyone that received a free upgrade of more than 1M, hurray for you! |

| reply to Smith6612 Good morning Smith 6612,
As you stated, I also find my computer no longer buffers before viewing streaming videos. I watch HULU more than I watch television but my computer would start stuttering/buffering at the beginning of every show.
At first, last night, I did not notice it was no longer doing the stuttering thing since I have gotten so use to it. Then I noticed there were no delays in any of the shows I watched, from start to finish. Pretty good.
Regarding the different speeds, I thought it was caused by the different bandwidth testers I used. However, perhaps I should do more checking.
Can you tell me how to check the transceiver stats? I am using a Westell modem.
Thank you again for the feedback.
Cora
Also I have been spreading the word! |

| reply to Cora IF the link Jodokast provided gives a 404 error (which it may if you have a newer modem), log into the modem and go to System Monitors, Advanced Monitors, click through the prompt, and then go to Transceiver stats. That page will have the DSL Line info. Post them up so we can see what the line is like. |

| Good morning,
Thank you for the information.
I tried Jodokast suggestion and was asked for a username and password then I received a 401 error.
Smith6612,I would like to give your suggestion a try, but unfortunately you are dealing with an idiot. I do not know how to log into the modem. Can you also provide me with those instructions?
Thank you,
