Smith6612 : Hey guys, I noticed today that Verizon has now boosted the speeds for the Business Class DSL on the 768kbps plan. It's now the same speed as the Residential plan. How I found out? Well, for those of you who remember me posting a topic a while back about asking for a DSL line at this one place I help out with the computer work with, and getting their upload boosted, I VNC'd into their network today, and running a speed test I pulled out 1.5Mbps/384kbps consistently, and got a download speed of 190KB/s and upload of 47.2KB/s. One thing I find odd though, is that somehow their line is synced at that speed. Their Westell 2200 was reporting an attenuation of 63.5dB and a margin of 12 on the downstream, and a margin of 9 on the upstream back on the old speed, running under ADSL and Interleaved mode. It must be barely hanging on to the new speed, but I'll have to find out. I know for a fact that they did not do anything to the line. It just happened to sync at a higher speed at 2AM this morning.

As for my line, here are my stats. Haven't lost the connection once.

quote:

Transceiver Revision: 4.2.0.11
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Fast
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1184 448
Margin (dB) 22.0 21.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 44.5 22.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 5.1 9.3

So yeah, for those of you with 768kbps Business connections, go get your upgrades :)

My loop length is around 17,000 ft. from CO and they said 1.5/384 is available but my price would go to $29.99/mo. I declined and rep. managed to confirm free upgrade to 1.0/384 and keeping my price plan for life. This morning, my order was completed as my upload speed is just above 1.1 with download close to 450 (3x faster than yesterday) - this is good enough for me until FIOS come around, something that VZ said was coming 2 years ago.

anon : Wow! Verizon really is a nightmare to deal with.

I've tried getting the answer to the "Upgrade from 768kbps/128kbps to 1Mbps/386kbps" question for about a month now. I sent half a dozen emails of which my only response was from an automated responder that was totally irrelevant to the question. I also tried opening up a chat session, and they informed that they could not provide those answers, and I would have to call Verizon. OK, I give up and make the dreaded phone call to Customer Service.

After the usual 30 minute wait time, I finally get someone on the phone. I ask about the upgrade and am told that they are delayed in rolling it out, and they can give me no idea when it's going to happen. The rep said it should have already occurred, and they are clueless as to when it will be completed, but "any day now."

I then ask if there is anything I can do on my end to speed up the process. I'm told, that indeed they could process this immediately, but that I would have to sign a new contract for one year and the cost would be $24.95 a month, up from the $19.99 a month I pay now. Great. I then ask what other speed options they may offer since I renewed my service last spring. I was told that the only other option I have is to upgrade to 3Mbs at $39.99 a month. I explained that the price she just gave me is $10.00 more a month than the price I was quoted of $29.00 a month for 3Mbs last April. It's also $10.00 more a month than is currently (meaning today!) listed on their Verizon DSL web site.

Verizon's response to this: the web site currently has deals that we are not authorized to make over the phone. If you try to order it on-line, you get the following message, "We’re sorry, but if you already have Verizon High Speed Internet Service, we are unable to take your order on-line." Of course if you try and upgrade over the phone, they quote you higher prices. Apparently, there is no possible way to upgrade your service on-line. This is a joke for a company that is an Internet Service Provider.

It appears that the only upgrade option I have is to wait until my contract expires next spring, and then order the new service, and start a new contract, so that I can get the $29.00 pricing. Is this any way to treat existing customers and to grow your ISP service? With this business model I'm amazed Verizon survives in the ISP industry at all. It's almost as if they're trying to fool their existing customers into paying higher prices. I also find it almost unbelievable how difficult they make it to upgrade your service and make them more money.

I'm now wondering if the rep I spoke to knew what she was talking about. I may try calling again at some other time to see if another rep will tell me the same thing. I also think there are probably different plans based on the market your in. I get service in eastern Massachusetts. If anyone has been told something similar, I'd like to hear about it.

dataice : The reps they have manning the phone lines in billing, which is outsourced to India, are totally clueless. When Verizon first rolls out anything new, it sometimes takes several months before the reps in India are made aware of the changes. Obviously poor communication exists in that company on a large scale. Unfortunately if you are an existing customer, most of the time you are unable to order an upgrade online, as it reports that you are an existing customer, and must contact billing to place an order. The vast majority of people that were able to place an order for one of their new speed tiers did so online and were customers that didn't currently have service with them. I had to wait 6 months before I could place a order for the new 7 meg tier,( have had dsl with Verizon since 2004) as support in India kept saying that no such tier exists, even though their home page clearly stated differently. That rep shouldn't have told you that you had to pay more to upgrade to 1.5mbit, since that tier dosen't really exist as a package of its own. 1.5 is only offered to customers who order the 3 meg package, but because of distance from the nearest central office, don't qualify for the full 3 megs, and instead are automatically provisioned for 1.5 megs at the same 3 meg price. Their official speed tiers are 1/384,3/768, and 7.1/768. If you are too far from your local central office for 7.1 they drop you back to 5 megs instead, at the same 7.1 price. Here is a screenshot of their home-page outlining the various tiers.
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

broadband412 : They just too far. I had to get support to help them get the service working better because it was really bad at one point. They would be without sync for half or more than half the time. They came and service improved quite a bit. There are still problems but at least it mostly works. hey told my friend that they are borderline. Yet even from the getgo they told them they were borderline but he service worked well for them over a year syncing at 890/160 and then the problems started. I hope if they do plan on auto-upgrading everyone that this won't cause any problems for them.

Smith6612 : I've heard about that flyer. I am close enough for 3Mbps + FastPath with only a 7 year old copper line connecting me from the RT to my home. A neighbor across the street who works off of the same phone cable as my cable is in has 3Mbps and it hold reliably. Roughly 2 miles wire length from the RT. The reason I mentioned the 1Mbps speed is because of the new speed mentioned in a news article, and the new speed for the starter plan shown on the Verizon plan, which I currently have but the older 768kbps speed, hence asking about the 1Mbps upgrade. Heck the added upload and slightly more download will be useful for me, but I'll take that free 3Mbps upgrade any day if Verizon is even doing it in my area, but yet again FiOS is set to come within a year now so I'd highly doubt I'd get one and would get promotions for FiOS instead (which I plan on moving to anyways).

I think it was about 10 days for me. If you don't get the postcard offering the upgrade, they may not being doing the bulk upgrade in your area(yet). I doubt they want to get into doing 1000s of single user upgrades by request. At least thats my guess. FYI, its 1.5Mbps upgrade, not 1Mbps, and its actually 3Mbps if you're close enough.

Bob

Smith6612 : Well, since that news article from this morning is out, I was considering boosting my current 768kbps speed to the 1Mbps speed.
