| [Rant] Diesel Fuel Price Gouging
I am really getting sick of the gouging that is going on in relation to Diesel fuel prices. It now sits a good 20 cents higher than Regular Gasoline (heck I could get Premium for cheaper than Diesel)
Diesel Fuel is a Byproduct of the refinement process (plus a few additives) and should not sit at a premium price to Regular Gas (it should be at par if not lower considering up until the past 5 years or so it was always lower price as it was cheaper to make) -- "I am not an abnormal person living in a normal world, I am a normal person living in an abnormal world" Rod Parsley

| reply to Last Parade said by Last Parade :I suspect it's higher to offset the increased fuel efficiency. I do have better efficiency than a gas counter part, but no where near the 20% efficiency.
As for Higher Taxes, how long have those taxes been around? More than 5 years? If so then there is no excuse for this premium on Diesel as it used to be cheaper than regular |

In these parts, Sunoco Gold Diesel is 103.9 and regular gas is 85.9 this AM. Used to be diesel cost less than regular . Even so, its still more economical for me to drive the diesel. |

| reply to BigSensFan Its because they CAN charge more for that product and people (truckers) will still buy it. If they where over charging on the price, people would not be buying it. Truth is, even at such a high price, its a product that is required, thus its demand is high. It has nothing to do with how cheap it is to make. Do you really believe a Diamond costs anywhere near what it sells for ? Argument can be made for various other products as well. |

| reply to BigSensFan They say its a Supply/Demand issue, but traditionally if you look at the price of Diesel, it tends to be a smoother curve vs. its Gasoline cousin.
I know a lot of people who are snickering now at those Diesel drivers who were always laughing to the bank when Diesel was cheaper than gas and always used to say "Buy a Jetta, only pay 75c/L while you pay $1.00/L"...
I believe as mr. weather also said it comes down to ULS now being required in Canada, and as they say, whatever the market will bear...its unfortunate, if you don't like it, trade your Diesel in . |

2 edits | reply to BigSensFan Diesel cars should be as fuel/cost efficient as much as or more than gas/hybrid cars and they are in Europe. But for whatever reason, diesel now costs so much more than regular gas in the US & Canada that a gas/hybrid car is more cost efficient.
An example of prices for Reg/Prem/Diesel in NJ

With diesel selling at those prices, diesel cars(especially since they sell at higher prices to comparable gas models) are just not cost competitive with gas. At the gas stations closest to me(within 9 miles) the cheapest regular is $.96/gal cheaper than the cheapest diesel. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. | reply to BigSensFan The price of diesel is a multi-pronged issue that is causing a good storm to arise from it.
First is supply and demand: With Europe being a lot smarter than us here in North America, they have been steadily switching over to diesel. About 50% of all vehicles for sale in Europe are now offered with a diesel engine as they are much more efficient than gas. The result is that more and more people are buying them and demand for diesel fuel is now outstripping the supply available as no one has built a new diesel refinery in the past 30 years.
Second is the refinery shutdowns out west. Both Esso and Shell shut down their refineries out in Alberta at almost the exact same time. The result is that the west is currently relying on deliveries from refineries in the eastern part of the country to supply stations out west, driving up the cost of diesel. |

| reply to BigSensFan it sucks, and it isn't right...here we have an option, a fuel that is much easier to make, is much more efficient and now burns quite clean (relatively speaking), and are being hosed for choosing it...you might as well just buy an F150, with a 5.4L Triton V8 to get the groceries with...until the industries stop punishing consumers for "taking the high road", things will never change (which is why nothing happened during the "oil crisis" in the 70's). -- Best Marketplace Ever: »www.cbc.ca/marketplace/speed_bumps/

Once my vehicle is out of warranty, I will probably go Bio Diesel (or maybe a 50/50 mixture) |
