| cable rates have been going up faster than the rate of inflation for 10 years now.
I understand the cost of programming goes up (ESPN, anyone?); what I don't understand is why an HD DVR box that I have been renting for over a year goes up $2/mo.
what cost increased for comcast for this box? The $2 is almost a 20% increase, much, much higher than inflation. The only answer I can come up with is they feel like making more money from me. |

Since according to AP 50% of cable subscribers only pick OTA over Cable or that and the 1 tier above that, most users aren't very profitable. Boosting digital's price or premiums won't help the bottom line if they are only %25. Boosting rental rates increases revenue system wide for almost everyone, and many times per customer/house, since most houses have 3-5 TVs. Atleast in urban areas, everything except OTA and PEG is encrypted, you can't even get the full basic tier without a box since some cable-only channels are in basic tier and they are encrypted (Lifetime or TBS for example). |

mworks join:2006-06-13 Faison, NC 1 edit | reply to jester121 I'll give you an example , I use charter cable. I wanted to switch to all analog channels. They quoted me a price of $60. But if I get the digital package I can get it for $45 + $5 box rental fee. So $50.
Why do you think they are offering more channels for less money ? It isn't because they are kind or generous. It is because they want people off the analog tiers and they want you to rent a box for every tv. So the $50 above seems cheaper, until you add in the 3 boxes I need for the other 3 tv, that I wouldn't need for plain analog. So I end up paying $65 a month. And that has zero HD channels in the lineup.
Plus they are free to raise the box rental fee anytime they like. |

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 took away the ability of franchisors (local governments) to regulate cable rates. That has allowed for a much greater number of cable channels and for the cable companies to recoup their investment in digital cable but it has also meant higher rates. |
