| small pipe, pots taxes, and high rates are deal breakers....
it's obvious the loss by telco is obvious why...
small pipe (at&t), high rates (verizon) POTS taxes/fees (both). telcos need to do a better job in competing if they want customers. FIOS & Uverse on their terms (adverse to the customer) just doesn't cut it anymore.. the honeymoon is over. |

| I agree. The 'main' reason that I picked Cable over Uverse was the bottom line.
TWC: 'All The Best' $89.95 package 6Mbps/512kbps Internet Digital TV Choice or Variety - 1 STB Analog TV (as many sets as I want) VoIP unlimited
AT&T Uverse '30/30/30' = $90 package 3Mbps/1Mbps (competitive) Digital TV U100 - 1 STB VoIP Unlimited
AT&T loses out because of the following: 1. VoIP isn't available yet in SoCal ... STILL. AT&T claimed that they'd sell me POTS for $30, but once you add in all the extra fees imposed on POTS, its not worth it. 2. No analog sets - gotta pay extra for each set. -- Canada = Hollywood North |

| reply to tmc8080 You can't really blame the telcos for most of those taxes & fees (even though a few of them are totally bogus)--the govt has done a really great job there (/sarcasm). You can, however, blame the telcos for how they've broken them out--something they lobbied for (line items) so as to "prove" just how much your bill is not for actual service, which has had entirely the opposite effect that they wanted. The cablecos bills are quite simpler--few line items. The fact that the cableco phone service makes long distance vs. local irrelevant is also a simplicity factor. Will the telcos learn anything from this? Not likely. Will the govt? Very unlikely. |

| Yeah, totally... I didn't mean to imply that there weren't other significantly stupid things that telcos have done... and will do... repeatedly (not that cablecos are exempt from being magnificently stupid, too. |

| reply to en102 It is the exact opposite in Hawaii. The best package deal is with Hawaiian Telcom and DSL...I just can't get it. Road Runner and Cable TV and voip (that you still have to have a landline because there is no backup whatsoever for the stupid voip that some folks risk their familie's lives having and that costs a LOT more than landline) are much more expensive. Plus, I don't have a TV although I pay for cable TV bulk rate for our condo. That is not something that can be opted out of. EVEN SO, HawTel com package is a better deal ...even though I pay for cable TV and don't use it.
The bad extra charges are not on a landline. They are for the cable box because you cannot use cable card here and all the other Oceanic TW charges...far more than just a landline which cannot have the price raised every few months like TW does. Much more sensible to go with the landline and dsl if you can get it. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet.
