| Help with computer build! Please
My older brother would like to get a new PC. I convinced him to buy the parts, and I would help him assemble a home built system. His budget is $1,100.00. That would be just for the box. He will use his existing keyboard, monitor, speakers, etc. He is not a big gamer, but does enjoy designing animated geometric figures and such. I wouldn't say he needs a high end graphics card, but would like to get something on the upper side of the scale. I would like to go with Nvidia on the graphics card. The two systems that I built awhile back have MSI motherboards. I really think I would like to go with an Asus board for him. I really like the Asus board I used in my wife's system that I built four years ago. He is totally fine using the built in sound instead of buying a sound card, so he can save money there. I convinced him to go with two internal hard drives. One for the OS, and one for storage. He would like to go with an Intel dual core processor at least 3 ghz. Also if you guys could recommend a really good power supply. I have a Corsair 620 watt in my current system, but I don't want to go out of his budget by buying the same power supply. RAM is pretty cheap, so he wants to go with four gigs. I am trying to convince him to run Vista 64 home premium. And finally a good DVD burner.
Did I miss anything??

Wow, one giant paragraph? Please, when you post, don't make one giant paragraph, it's hard on the eyes and hard to read, please.
Now for the build:
Why ASUS for mainboard, by saying it has to be ASUS you are severely limiting yourself. Why not a good Gigabyte P45 Mainboard, for instance?
As far as nVidia for the video, once again, why limit your choices to nVidia solutions? What specific reason is there, if any? I might suggest a Radeon 4850 for instance.
As far as power supply: It depends upon what the build will be comprised of. Let's say a mid or lower mid end PCI Express 16 video card is used and two HDs, a quad core, 2 sticks of RAM, air cooling, 1 optical drive...
...Well, such a system could be fired just fine by a Corsair VX 450 or a 520 if you wanted headroom for some reason. Corsair is one of the safest bets, and the prices are very good too.
You don't tell us what monitor he has! CRT? LCD? Size/Resolution? We need to know that.
What else does he do on a computer?

Actually if you read my second post, you will see that I found a nice gigabyte mobo that I really like.
As far as sticking to Nvidia on the graphics card, my brother is actually the one who requested that. Maybe he is rather partial to Nvidia.....I don't know.
He will be using a 22" LCD monitor. I assume the resolution is 1680x1050.
As far as other usage for the system, I would guess allot of text. He mentioned watching DVD'S. |

Gigabyte makes approximately 11 P45 mainboards, compare all of them for the right one, some have better cooling and better multi phase regulation.

I don't know what to recommend for the kind of design he is doing but the 640mB 8800gts cards are obsolete. A 9800gt is a good substitute. |
