Re: Recording from external source I've never used this, but since I often post about things of which I have absolutely no knowledge of, this is another attempt to secure my reputation. 
GarageBand should be able to take care of this, but it may be a little more complex than you're needing (that's the impression I get).
Maybe you could try Audacity. It allows for recording through line input devices among other options. I've never used it, so I'm not sure if it is easier to use than Garageband, but I'll just throw it out there as another option for you to consider.
