Drano in washing machine?

Would adding Drano into the tub of a washing machine hurt it? Fill the tub with water, no laundry, add draino, do a wash cycle. Would this damage the washing machine?

I certainly would not do it. Is there a reason you want to do it?

The Drano I've seen lately is mostly chlorine. I don't know if that's across the product line.

If you must use drano, just put it down the drain. Definitely don't put it in the washer, it'd probably wreck the seals in the washer.

I've got to ask...
Why in the world would you even consider putting drano in a washing machine?

If it were my washing machine I certainly would not do that.

draino will not work on lint.

it used to be mild sulfuric acid, which would break down the grease and soaps in the drain. from what I`ve read above, I guess they changed the formulation.

As a plumber, I have only seen draino do bad stuff, never good. I do not recommend using it at all, if you have a slow drain, either go to a hardware store and spend a few bucks on a cheap snake, or call a plumber to do it right..

good luck

I always thought it was lye, aka sodium hydroxide.

According to the MSDS for Draino, the ingredients are water, sodium hypochlorite (bleach), sodium hydroxide (lye as you pointed out), and sodium silicate (used as a precipitate).

Of course there are a variety of drain cleaner products on the market so if you aren't using the original Draino™ your results may be different.

I did too until I went to clean up a mess a relative made trying clear a clog with it.

The MSDS's are here »www.scjohnson.com/msds_us_ca/drano.asp

This is the one I ran into. Not sure of the others

As others have noted, it is; however, folks do use sulfuric acid to clear drains on occasion. I friend of mine in fact told me a harrowing story of him doing just that. The resulting cloud of hydrogen sulfide, according to the sheriff, "...wasn't quite enough to endanger the neighborhood. We don't need to evacuate."

Good times.

The MSDS posted is for Liquid Drano.

The MSDS for crystal Drano is 30-60% sodium hydroxide by weight.

Guess like the OP isn't coming back. So in summary Draino isn't really good to use. Draino in a washing machine,NEVER.

Put Pennzoil 30w oil in their too and make sure all your clothes are in their when you run it to ruin all of your clothes. Why don't you call a professional and have them tell you the easiest way to ruin the gaskets in your washing machine but be warned, he will laugh his ass off.

You might as well throw some gasoline in there too, let's not forget about lighting the match. Then your problems will be solved.... that's once you buy a new washing machine

Haven't used Drano since my friend came across one of them blowguns.

Yes, and you would not like your clothes again.

That sure looks like lye is in the Liquid Drano version too. Not as much as the crystals version uses, but Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is also known as lye.
