[Speed] Looking for large file for speed test.

Hi all.

My speeds seem to be pretty slow when testing on speed test sites that use java or flash. I was wondering if someone could provide a link to that test file downloadable thing that gives a more accurate rating.

I should apparently be at 12 Mbps but speed tests are showing 4 at most.

Thanks.

Fantastic.

So, during the download, I was rocking about 530 Kb/s. This should be a lot higher if I was in fact at 12 Mbps, no?

Absolutely. Have you done a tweak test? How are your signals?

I only get like 180-200kb/sec off that..

Hi,

optonline isn't the best...it can't handle the faster speeds from my experience.

Comcast has their own speedtest site, which seems to be fairly accurate. It's located at »speedtest.comcast.net. Give it a try.

OOL test64 is not ideal for many people, myself included.

Try dl.tv and start a couple of the larger videos they have and add up the speeds(or use a meter like NetMeter or DU Meter)

Seems DL.TV is slow..I use to be able to max out my download on just 1 download..now it seems you need to download a couple from there to do that.

Agreed. It used to give me fairly accurate results, and I have always recommended it to posters in forums, but it has been sucking for me for at least a year now...

Not an issue as the slower response time is not carrying through to the farther upstream hops.

It's a CDN network test, so it should route to a server closer to you.

That will not give accurate results on anything higher than 6Mbps. With powerboost you will end your download with speeds far higher than actual speeds once boost is gone. Boost kicked in for about 50MB out of that file and I was seeing 2MB/s on the test. After that it dropped to over 900KB/s which is still impossible on this tier. This however will allow him to see if his connection is actually working correctly. If he is still getting slow speeds then something is wrong but it won't give him an accurate result on what he really is getting speedwise without boost.

According to the test, I downloaded the file at 950KB/s constant till the end of it. It just stood over 900KB/s after the first half no matter what. That is impossible on a 6Mbps cap.

6600/8=825KB/s assuming I GET ABSOLUTELY NOTHING below the max cap on the whole download. Usually you will see 6100 out of those 6600.

You want an accurate test? Open up a torrent you have and let the computer be completely bandwidth eaten for about 5 mins or so. You should see an accurate test. When I do that I see that my download never exceeds 775KB/s which is 6200Kbps out of the 6600Kbps cap on the downside for the 6/1Mbps tier and never above 130KB/s on the upside.

I'm on the 22/5 tier. 2.69M/sec * 8bits/byte = 21.52mbps

Hard to get closer than that.

The rate for 0-40MB will be high due to Powerboost, but NetMeter/DuMeter/any decent HTTP get utility will show your accurate speed for 41-100MB.

I peaked at 623KB/sec but averaged 610-618 or so from »ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/test64

I'm on the 6meg DSL from AT&T

611-622KB/sec from the 100mb test

That looks more like powerboost than anything. You had only downloaded 12 megs of the file, now if after 60 or 70 megs you were still getting 4.15 MB/sec, then yeah that's good

I wonder if they throttle Comcast customers? I can peg 1.5MB/sec all day from my home 15Mbps connection and pull at 11.1MB/sec all day from my 100Mbps connection from the OOL FTP site.

In my case, I would venture to guess that it's the 3000miles and possible poor routing/peering with the other networks to get here from there - and the fact that it's a single connection.

My computers(all of them) are tweaked for the speeds.
Test64 from OOL and off network will always be a crapshoot.
It might work fine, it might suck... for me, it sucks!

Internet Explorer's transfer window is an averaged rate over {x} seconds, not a real time rate. Using DuMeter or NetMeter would give you a better picture of real-time transfer rates.

Thats a good site to test your download speeds. On DU meter I show a 23meg burst and then a steady 6.5 meg.
